The members of the Chair of English Linguistics mourn the premature
death of their friend and colleague Dr Hartmut Czepluch, who died on
May 7 after serious illness at the age of 58.

Hartmut had been associated with the Chair of English Linguistics at
Göttingen for many years and completed both his dissertation and his
Habilitation here. When he died, he was employed as a permanent member
of its teaching and research staff.

Through his work as a formal syntactician and later in life about the
relationship between grammar and discourse, Hartmut became well known
internationally. His work on Case and the double object construction
has been widely cited in the research literature and standard
introductory textbooks to syntactic theory.

In honour and remembrance of Hartmut, Professor Webelhuth will
interrupt his ongoing lectures of the summer term to hold a lecture
dedicated to Hartmut´s work. The public is cordially invited to attend
this lecture on Monday, May 26 at 1:15 pm in the Medienraum of the
English Department of the University of Göttingen (Käte-Hamburger-Weg
3).

A moving memorial for Hartmut was held on Saturday, May 17. Those
wishing to make a gesture of remembrance are invited to follow the
suggestion by Hartmut´s family to make a donation in his name to the
University Clinic Hospice of the University of
Göttingen. [Förderverein für Palliativpatienten der Universitätsklinik

We will all miss Hartmut's gentle friendship, his humble dependability
and professionalism, and most of all the infecting enthusiasm with
which he dedicated himself to the linguistic profession.
