Description:

Applications are invited for a newly-created Chair of Linguistics and
Head of Linguistics & Phonetics, in the School of Modern Languages and
Cultures.

We are seeking an outstanding candidate who will provide dynamic and
innovative academic leadership in both the Department and the
School. The University is committed to the continuing enhancement of
its standing as a major research and a major teaching university and
the successful applicant must be capable of ensuring the achievement
of a high level of excellence both through his/her personal research
and teaching, and by encouraging colleagues in the Department and in
the School to make their own distinctive contributions.  An
international reputation in Linguistics with a strong and consistent
research record and evidence of continuing productivity is essential,
as is the capacity to attract postgraduate students and research
income to the University.

Applications are particularly welcome from candidates whose research
specialisms lie in interdisciplinary areas of Linguistics research
and/or in one or more of the languages represented in the School
(Arabic, Berber, Bulgarian, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, French, German,
Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek, Modern Hebrew, Mongolian, Polish,
Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish and Urdu).  The appointee must
also possess significant management skills and experience and will be
expected to play a key role in the strategic development of activities
of the Department of Linguistics & Phonetics and the School of Modern
Languages and Cultures.
