Abstracts are invited in all areas of linguistics for the Annual
Meeting of The Michigan Linguistic Society.  Presentations will be
twenty minutes in length plus five minutes for discussion.

Abstract submission guidelines:

* Deadline for RECEIPT of abstracts is September 5, 2003.

* Abstracts should be limited to 500 words excluding references.

* The title of the abstract should appear at the top of the abstract
    and the author's name, abstract title, affiliation and email
    address should appear on a separate page.

* Abstracts should be submitted by email to mls2003 at umich.edu as
    part of the message text or as a PDF attachment or as a Word file
    attachment.

* Abstracts may also be submitted in hard copy by faxing three
    copies to the attention of MLS Abstract Review Committee at
    734-936-3406 or mailing three copies to MLS 2003, Department of
    Linguistics, 4080 Frieze Building, University of Michigan, Ann
    Arbor, MI 48109-1285.

* E-mail submission is strongly encouraged. Abstracts received after
    September 5, 2003, will not be considered.

Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously, and notification of acceptance
will be sent by September 12, 2003.  Registration and other conference
information will appear on the conference website:

Les doctorants et jeunes chercheurs des trois laboratoires de Sciences
du Langage de Toulouse :
- C.P.S.T. (Centre Pluridisciplinaire de Sémiolinguistique Textuelle)
- E.R.S.S. (Equipe de Recherche en Syntaxe et Sémantique)
- Laboratoire Jacques Lordat (Centre Interdisciplinaire des Sciences
du Langage et de la Cognition)

ont pris linitiative dorganiser ensemble deux journées détude qui
sadressent aux doctorants et jeunes chercheurs en Sciences du Langage.

La thématique retenue pour ces journées est « la question du sens
». Problématique transversale par excellence, cette question intéresse
bien évidemment la sémantique mais elle interroge également dautres
niveaux danalyse linguistique : phonologie, morphologie, syntaxe,
sémiotique, pragmatique Elle implique par ailleurs dautres
questionnements émanant de diverses disciplines des Sciences Humaines
et Sociales : sociolinguistique, psycholinguistique, sociologie,
psychologie, philosophie du langage

APPEL À COMMUNICATIONS

Pour chacun dentre eux, un certain nombre de pistes, qui ne prétendent
aucunement à lexhaustivité, fournissent un cadre à la réflexion :

* SENS ET DISCOURS
- Quelle(s) incidence(s) du contexte sur la construction du sens ?
- Comment analyser le sens en discours ?
- Quelle(s) interaction(s) entre sens lexical et sens en discours ?
- Relation(s) sémantique(s) : quelle manifestation dans le discours ?
- Quels critères sémantiques pour la catégorisation des textes (types
de textes, genres textuels...) ?
- L'émergence du sens dans la combinatoire texte/discours.
- La prise en compte de la dimension dialogique des textes dans la
construction du sens.
- Repérage et/ou analyse des stratégies énonciatives en fonction des
genres de textes.
- Influence du support textuel sur la compréhension.
- Quelle(s) interrelation(s) entre discours verbal et discours
non-verbal ?

* SENS ET LANGUE(S) :
- Invariants et variabilité du sens dans les langues.
- Polysémie et langue(s).
- Comment un concept est représenté dans différentes langues ?
- Marquage obligatoire, marquage optionnel dans les langues.
- Sens et contexte socio-culturel.
- Problème d'équivalence entre les langues (standardisation,
traduction, ...).
- Comment rendre compte de la diversité des langues (sémantique
comparée, sémiotique des cultures, disciplines herméneutiques, ...) ?

* SENS ET CATÉGORIES :
- Dénommer : est-ce toujours catégoriser ?
- Nomination/dénomination : (re)nommer un référent, nommer un nouveau
référent.
- Les limites du sens : prototypes, continuums, représentations
cognitives.
- Les figures rhétoriques : quand on touche aux catégories, quels
effets sémantiques produits ?
- Les catégories sémantiques à l'épreuve de la diversité des langues.
- Catégories et classes sémantiques : comment les textes les
remodèlent ?
- Construction des catégories dans l'acquisition de la langue
maternelle.

L'objectif de ces deux journées est de réfléchir ensemble sur la
question du sens, en confrontant les points de vue propres aux
différents domaines d'analyse représentés.  Les débats seront ouverts
par une conférence inaugurale.  Au terme de ces deux journées, une
table ronde animée par des chercheurs expérimentés fera la synthèse
des questions débattues.

Les communications de 20 minutes seront suivies de 10 minutes de
discussion.

Les propositions de communication seront de préférence envoyées sous
format électronique, en fichier Word ou rtf ; police Times New Roman,
14 pts, interligne 1,5.
