Meeting Description:

The scope of this workshop is to join together people working in the
two neighbouring and often overlapping fields of Natural Language and
Speech Technologies research oriented towards Language Learning and
Tutoring. Thanks to latest remarkable advances in NLP research, there
has been an increasing interest among researchers in the
implementation of NLP-based educational applications for both
large-scale assessment and classroom instruction. Educational
applications have been developed across a variety of subject domains,
among others, in automated evaluation of free-responses and
intelligent tutoring.

We feel that research in Artificial Intelligence, Computational
Linguistics, Corpus-Driven and Corpus Linguistics, Formal Linguistics,
Machine Aided Translation, Machine Translation, Natural Language
Interfaces, Natural Language Processing, Theoretical Linguistics has
produced results which have proven, are proving and will prove very
useful in the field of Computer-Assisted Language Learning.

Research areas may concern Second language oriented research but also
First Language learning in presence of language deficiencies -
deafness, dislexia - and sign language. In more general terms, we are
targeting intelligent tutoring systems that incorporate
state-of-the-art NLP methods to evaluate response content, using
either text- or speech-based analyses.

The three-day Symposium is supported by the InSTIL SIG three parent
associations, CALICO, EUROCALL and ISCA (International Speech
Communication Association) and . It builds on the excellence and
excitement of the ISCA workshop STiLL 98 , held in Marholmen, Sweden
and on InSTIL events since (2000 and 2002).

Sub-themes: In the selection process, preference will be given to
submissions for Papers, Show & Tell Demonstrations and Posters (please
specify) related to at least one of the following areas:

The Journal of Language, Identity and Education is seeking submissions
for a special topic issue entitled 'queer inquiry in language
education', which examines sexual identities within language education
(or language-in-education) contexts.  For more information please
contact the guest editor, Cynthia D. Nelson, via email at
cynthia.nelson at uts.edu.au.  We are soliciting papers that critically
examine the domain of sexual identity within second language, foreign
language or literacy programs, or other education programs in which
language is a central focus. Papers may engage with a diversity of
teaching contexts and levels (e.g. primary, secondary, tertiary, adult
or community-based education), approaches to knowledge production, and
theoretical frameworks, though all papers are expected to consider
questions of identity, subjectivity or representation as explored in
queer theory or other frameworks (poststructuralist, feminist,
postcolonialist). Contributions from nontraditional settings and
under-represented scholarly circles are en couraged.

We are currently soliciting two- to three-page abstracts for this
issue. Send by e-mail or snail mail two copies of the abstract and a
brief (50-word) biographical statement with a full mailing address,
daytime/evening phone numbers, and email address (if
available). Abstracts should be mailed no later than March 1, 2004 to
