Meeting Description:

The theme of the conference is "The formal primitives of phonology".
We thus encourage submission of empirical and theoretical
investigations into topics such as locality, precedence, scope of
conditions and feature logic.

Call for papers

Third North American Phonology Conference (NAPhC3)

The Linguistics Program at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec
will host the Third North American Phonology Conference (NAPhC3) from
May 20-23th, 2004.

The conference begins the evening of May 20th with a Keynote address
by Mark Liberman (UPenn).

We are pleased to announce that the following phonologists have all
accepted invitations to the conference:

Juliette Blevins (Berkeley)
William Idsardi (Delaware)
Rene Kager (Utrecht)
Bert Vaux (Wisconsin)

Abstract length is not limited--complete papers may be submitted for
evaluation. Papers may be submitted and presented in French or
English.

Students are especially encouraged to submit abstracts.

Accepted papers will be allotted 40 minutes, including discussion
time.  Papers not accepted as talks will be considered for the Poster
Sessions.  Please indicate in your message if you do NOT want to be
considered for a poster presentation.

Selected papers will be published in a volume by a major academic
publisher.

Abstracts must be submitted electronically to
naphc at modlang-hale.concordia.ca

Deadline for receipt of abstracts is January 15, 2004. Registration
information will be provided after the announcement of the program in
early February.

Preferred formats in decreasing order are pdf, ps, plain text, rtf,
WORD (Mac or Windows), WordPerfect (Linux, Mac or Windows).  Word and
Wordperfect users should use no other phonetics fonts than SIL Doulos
(available at http://www.sil.org/computing/fonts/encore-ipa.html ).
If you make a ps or pdf file under Windows or Mac, please verify its
integrity before sending it. Do not send any compressed files--make
sure your mail program does not compress automatically.

FIRST CIRCULAR AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Dear Colleagues,

We are happy to announce that the 35th Poznan Linguistic Meeting will
take place in Poznan between the 18th and 20th of May, 2004
(Tuesday-Thursday).

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Meeting will be organised by the School of English, Adam
Mickiewicz University, Poznan. The leitmotif of this edition is going
to be Linguistics for the Future. The Meeting will immediately follow
the 13th Annual Conference of the Polish Association for the Study of
English (PASE), also organised by our School, which will be taking
place on 16-18 May, 2004, with a joint session in the afternoon of 18
May. You are welcome to participate in both events.

This first session will be devoted to the issue of selection of
pronunciation dictionaries for English phonetics teaching at the
university level. Sessions on: the latest advances in speech
technology; aspects of linguistic typology; intercomponential
interfaces (phonetics/phonology, morphology/syntax, etc.);
controversial issues in Polish phonetics and phonology; and language
and speech resources are also planned.

PAPERS

Proposals for papers (as well as OTHER SESSIONS or WORKSHOPS) are
warmly invited. Authors should submit abstracts by the end of January,
2004, preferably by e-mail (plm at ifa.amu.edu.pl); PC-format floppy
disks will also be accepted. Abstracts should be about 500 words long,
and should be attached to an e-mail message or included on the
diskette as a plain text file (.txt).

The abstracts will be reviewed by an international advisory
board. Authors will be notified of acceptance by the end of February,
2004.
