UNIVERSITY OF BASLE/BASEL

Chair of the Sociolinguistics of English as a World Language
Applications are invited for appointment to the position of Professor
of So ciolinguistics and Sociology of Language in the field of English
as a world language, in the Department of English in the Faculty of
Arts.  The field covered should include both native-speaker and
non-native-speaker varietie s of English (including pidgins and
English-based creoles).  The successfu l candidate should also be able
to teach core courses in phonetics/phonolog y, morphology, syntax,
semantics and pragmatics to undergraduate students a t all levels,
where appropriate by organizing assistance by well-qualified support
staff.

The Faculty of Arts is restructuring its degree courses by
establishing B.A . and M.A. programmes, and the person appointed will
be expected to work to gether with other modern language Departments
in this and to contribute to joint courses and degrees.

The current areas of research specialization for linguistics in the
modern language departments are: (1) sociolinguistics, language
varieties, language contact, (2) cognitive linguistics,
multilingualism, language acquisition, (3) text analysis, text
linguistics, textual studies.  The language of instruction is English.

The new chair-holder will be expected to participate fully in
university ad ministration.  The official language of the University
is German.
