STUDENT SUPPORT AT THE INSTITUTE FOR INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS AT THE
UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

The Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) at the University of
Memphis invites applications from outstanding graduate students with
an interest in various aspects of cognition and natural language
processing. Particularly students with a background in computational
linguistics, cognitive science, and cognitive psychology are
encouraged to apply. Students will be trained in cognitive science,
computational linguistics, natural language processing, and artificial
intelligence. In addition to their course work, they will work
part-time on innovative research projects, for which they receive
tuition wavers and stipends.

The Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) at the University of
Memphis is an interdisciplinary center that incorporates the fields of
cognitive science, psychology, computational linguistics, computer
science, philosophy, engineering, and physics. The students and
faculty are working on a number of federally funded grants that
involve the development and testing of intelligent tutoring systems
(and other computer systems that require natural language processing).
These systems are empirically grounded in cognitive science and and
incorporate natural language and dialogue facilities, often using
conversational agents with speech generation, facial expressions, and
gestures. Graduate students in the IIS receive masters or doctoral
degrees in Psychology or in the Departments of Mathematical Sciences
(with a concentration in computer science). For more information on
IIS, see http://www.iismemphis.org and http://www.psyc.memphis.edu.
