The Committe on Ethnic Diversity in Linguistics Minority Travel
Scholarship

Minority students who submit an abstract for a presentation at the LSA
annual meeting or at any of the concurrent sessions may apply for
travel funds (up to $500) from CEDL by submitting an application to
the Chair of CEDL. An application consists of
1. A letter from the student designating the minority group to which
the student belongs and estimating the travel costs.
2. A copy of the abstract.
3. A brief letter of support from the student's advisor or department
chair. The letter from the advisor or chair must indicate that the
student is in good standing in his or her program of studies and it
must indicate how much travel money the student's home institution
will be using to support the student. (We encourage institutions
to support students with conference travel money when possible.)
This letter must be sealed in an envelope with the advisor or
   chair's signature over the flap.

Please submit applications to the Chair of CEDL:

(Questions/comments only, please. Put "CEDL Scholarship Q" in the
subject line.)

Eligible students will be funded based on the ranking their abstract
receives from the relevant program committee. Before CEDL releases
funds to a student who has been awarded a CEDL travel scholarship, the
Chair of CEDL must be provided with evidence that the student is a
member of the LSA and has registered for the annual meeting in
question. Students may be asked to provide travel receipts.

For the January 2004 annual meeting, CEDL will award travel money to
two students. depending on the available funds, CEDL hopes to
increase the number of awards to three for the 2005 meeting. The
scholarship program is funded by donations made to CEDL.

Although there is no firm deadline for applying for the travel
scholarship, realistically a student who wishes to attend the LSA
Annual Meeting in January should apply by no later than 15 November in
order for their application to be given proper consideration before
the meeting.
