The BBC Web site has a piece, dated Tuesday, 25 November 2003,
entitled:

Talking newspapers get human 'voice'
by Geoff Adams-Spink

    An excerpt:

Partially-sighted and blind people will be able to get
time-sensitive information from newspapers and magazines from a device
which reads to them, instead of relying on recorded tapes.
Rhetorical produces the synthetic voices by having someone read a
standard script.
The various sounds are then "sliced and diced" and used in the
company's speech engine.
