Abstract:

The comprehensive analysis of the segmental and metrical system of the
Swiss German dialect of Thurgovian by Astrid Kraehenmann provides a
significant contribution to both phonetic and phonological theory. It
comprises substantial production data from the author's original
fieldwork on which extensive acoustic measurements with statistical
evaluation were performed. In addition, a theoretically revealing
experimental investigation on perception aptly supplements the
production material. The analysis, moreover, is the first in-depth
study of this area, tracing the dialect back also to its Old High
German roots and comparing it to the historical development of
Standard German, Dutch, and English.

Quantity alternations - notably word-initial long-short consonantal
alternations - asymmetric neutralization of phonetic-phonological
contrasts, stress and weight are most prominent in the analysis of the
Thurgovian phonology. These bear on important current theoretical
issues such as the representation of geminates, phonetic correlates of
quantity and the phonetics-phonology interface in general, syllable
structure and metrics.
