Brian Hughes, Head of the Department of English Studies at the
University of Alicante (Spain) has died, aged 52. He was born in
Glasgow, but had been at this University since 1980. In 1993 he got
his Ph.D with a thesis on Anglo-Irish literature, specifically on the
Irish poet Seamus Heaney. He has written and co-written some books on
this topic: ''Seamus Heaney, Antología poética'' (Juan Gil-Albert,
1994) and ''Diccionario cultural e histórico de Irlanda'' (with
E. Aliaga and R. González; Ariel, 1996).

Although at the beginning both his research and his teaching were
related to literature (he did very pioneering research in his field
and introduced Anglo-Irish literature to Spanish researchers), in the
last years he had also specialised in legal language and the problems
involved in the translation of legal terms from and into English, and
he also devoted some of his teaching to this research area. The
outcome of his interest in legal language was a number of dictionaries
and essays on legal discourse which have been very successful and
which have turned into essential tools for anybody working in this
area. He has co-authored several essays and dictionaries with
Dr. Enrique Alcaraz, another professor at the Department of English
Studies: ''Diccionario de términos jurídicos: inglés-español,
Spanish-English'' (Ariel, 1993, 7th revised edition 2003);
''Diccionario de > términos económicos, financieros y comerciales:
inglés-español, Spanish-English'' (Ariel, 1996, 3rd edition 2002) and
''El español jurídico'' (Ariel, 2002) and ''Legal Translation
Explained'' (Manchester: St. Jerome 2002). Other co-authored books
include ''Diccionario de términos de márketing, publicidad y medios de
comunicación'' (with E. Alcaraz and M.A. Campos; Ariel, 1999); and
''Diccionario de términos de turismo y del ocio: español-inglés,
inglés-español'' (with E. Alcaraz and M.A. Campos; Ariel, 2000). He
was currently writing up to five more books on the same subject, but
the thoughts of his brilliant mind have been stopped by his sudden
death.

Dr. Briah Hughes was an extraordinary person, efficient Head of the
Department, and a good friend of all his colleagues. The emptiness
that we all feel in our hearts can never be filled. All of us will
miss him.
