FIRST CIRCULAR / CALL FOR PAPERS

The conference aims to bring together researchers working in the field
of modality in English. It will provide a natural forum for scientific
exchange both for specialists in the field and for those who are new
to the area and wish to be updated on recent developments.

The conference will be organised under the ægis of PSDDA (Politique,
Société et Discours du Domaine Anglophone), a Research Centre at the
Faculty of Arts of the University of Pau (France). It is designed to
be a follow-up to the International Conference on Modality in
Contemporary English held in Verona on 6-8 September 2001 which, among
other things, led to the publication of Modality in Contemporary
English, edited by R. Facchinetti, M. Krug & F. Palmer ' Mouton de
Gruyter, 2003.

There will be six oral sessions and one poster session.

Papers and posters are invited, preferably on the following topics:

-	types of modality
-	modality and cognition
-	modality and grammaticalization
-	modality and discourse.

Authors of both papers and posters should submit anonymous abstracts
not exceeding three A4 pages in length (figures, tables and references
included), together with a separate page specifying the authors name,
affiliation, surface mail address and e-mail address.

Abstracts should be sent by e-mail (preferably as attachments) to Paul
Larreya (paul.larreya at wanadoo.fr), who will also answer any queries
regarding the submission of papers/posters and the organisation of the
conference.

WORKSHOP

In conjunction with the conference, a workshop will be held by Pierre
Busuttil and Michael Parsons, Professors at the University of Pau. It
will be centred on a corpus-based analysis of the use of modality in
political discourse, with particular reference to prosodic features.


VENUE

The venue of the conference will be the Faculté des Lettres, on the
campus of the University, which is of easy access from the city centre
and the hotels. (There are convenient bus links and a special bus
service will be organized for participants.)  Internet access will be
provided for all the delegates throughout the conference.

Pau is near the Pyrenees, 500 miles from Paris and 60 miles from the
Atlantic Ocean. There are frequent air and rail links between Pau and
Paris: 10 daily flights each way, 1 daily flight from and to London
Stansted, and convenient air links with Lyon and a few other European
airports. You can also reach Pau via the airports of Tarbes/Lourdes
(25 miles), Biarritz (60 miles), Toulouse (130 miles) or Bordeaux (130
miles).  There are 4 direct TGV trains a day each way between Pau and
Paris. Journey time is approximately 5 hours.

POST-CONFERENCE TOUR

The region of Pau (Béarn) is rich in tourist attractions. For those
who wish to visit some of these, the Local Committee will organize a
post-conference tour. Full details of the tour will be given in due
course on the conference website.
