Description:

Assistant Professor, Applied Linguistics, tenure track, beginning
fall, 2004. The teaching duties will consist of a combination of
linguistics and ESL theory and pedagogy courses, both at the
undergraduate and graduate level. Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in
ESL, Applied Linguistics or closely related field by Fall 2004. The
successful candidate will have experience and knowledge working with
English language learners (ELL) at the public school level, as well as
experience teaching ESL/ELL in various environments

Preference will be given to candidates with training and experience in
helping ELLs acquire literacy and other English language skills from
childhood through secondary levels (EC - 16).  Theoretical preparation
and practical experience working with bilingualism and knowledge of
Spanish are also preferred.  We are looking for a colleague who has
training and/or experience developing new programs and curricula for
such students. The department is expanding its reach into public
education of the Rio Grande Valley and expects to train public school
teachers in the Rio Grande Valley whose focus is to teach
children/adolescents ESL.  Experience in and commitment to use of
technology for augmenting or conducting courses online is also
desirable.

The Department of English has two dynamic graduate programs, an
M.A. in English and a Master of Arts in English as a Second
Language. The department has plans for a new M.F.A. in Creative
Writing and a Ph.D. in composition studies. Institutional and
departmental support for research is strong. The University of
Texas-Pan American serves the Rio Grande Valley, enrolls 15,000
students and is a member of the University of Texas System. UTPA is
located in one of the fastest growing areas in the country, in
semi-tropical South Texas, in close proximity to Mexico and the
beautiful beaches of South Padre Island. For more information, please
