Subject:  All About: Ask A Linguist

"So, you're a linguist... What exactly IS Linguistics?"

Most of us have probably had to answer this question more than a few
times and it probably wasn't the easiest question to answer.
Ask-A-Linguist is designed to help linguists and non-linguists alike
understand what linguistics is. It was designed to be a place where
anyone interested in language or linguistics can ask a question and
get the response of a panel of professional linguists.

We have recently updated the Ask-A-Linguist System so that archiving
of the messages is now automatic and the search function is much more
reliable. Panel members use a web-based form to reply to the messages
and they are automatically archived on the web. This provides us with
a much more accurate archiving tool than was previously used.

The move to the web-based system was a starting point to hopefully
many other additions to Ask-A-Linguist. We now have the ability to
integrate this data with the rest of the LINGUIST List Archives. This
means that searches on LINGUIST List would also show relevant
Ask-A-Linguist questions, which tend to be much more "user friendly".

We are also hoping to add to the already new index and search pages of
Ask-A-Linguist to incorporate more useful links and other features.
