There is an open call for expression of interest for positions as
'Detached National Expert' in the field of Language Technology and
other areas at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC)
in Ispra, at the Lago Maggiore in Northern Italy. Applicants from the
fields of Computational Linguistics, Machine Learning, Computer
Science, Linguistics, Statistics or related areas are particularly

To support the EU enlargement policy, the JRC promotes the integration
of the new EU Countries in the European Research Area (ERA) and
assists them in their preparation for the accession to the EU, in
particular through an increased participation in the relevant JRC
activities. Special attention will be given to candidatures of experts
from accession and candidate countries associated to the EU RTD
Framework Programme, namely: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Cyprus,
Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovak
Republic, Slovenia and Turkey.

tasks depend on the profile of the applicants, but will most likely
involve participation in current research projects, including the
adaptation of existing text mining tools to further languages.
	
The JRC's Language Technology group specialises in multilingual and
cross-lingual text analysis applications, making use of multilingual
thesauri and nomenclatures, and using mainly statistical and Machine
Learning techniques. Fields of activity are document gathering,
information extraction, terminology extraction, thesaurus indexing,
multilingual classification and clustering, monolingual and
cross-lingual document similarity calculation, detection of major and
of breaking news, visualisation of textual information, etc. For more

The JRC is situated in Ispra, in Northern Italy, about one hour West
of the city of Milan. Its 1700 international staff work in a
multi-disciplinary and multilingual environment.
	
Indicative duration of the stay is 6 to 12 months. CONDITION for
Detached National Experts is that they are temporarily detached from
their home organisation (ministries, national research centres,
universities, companies, etc.)! They receive a 105 Euro per day
supplement to their home salary (figure to be updated soon). For exact

Interested persons should send their CV together with a list of
publications and the application form to ipsc at jrc.it before 28 May
2004. The submitted applications will be evaluated and a reply will be
sent to the applicants by September 2004. A reserve list of successful
candidates will be set up, which will be filled by the JRC according
to the future availability. The constitution of such a list does not
present any commitment for future employment by the European
