NEW MA PROGRAMME IN PRAGMATICS AT UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON

Beginning September 2004, the Department of Phonetics and Linguistics at
UCL ( http://www.phon.ucl.ac.uk ) will be offering an MA in Pragmatics,
alongside existing programmes leading to an MA in Phonology, MA in
Syntax and MA in Linguistics:

MA SYNTAX      (www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/educ/pg/syntax.htm)
MA LINGUISTICS (www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/educ/pg/linguistics.htm)

The MA PRAGMATICS, the MA SYNTAX and the MA PHONOLOGY are advanced
programmes intended for applicants who already have a BA in
Linguistics or similar degree and who are looking for a course
specially designed to prepare them for PhD research in their chosen
field of study. The MA in LINGUISTICS is intended for applicants with
very little background in linguistics.

The MA PRAGMATICS consists of four courses in pragmatics, a research
seminar in the relevant area and an additional option, chosen by the
student in consultation with their advisor. In addition, since
phenomena in one area can often only be understood in a larger
linguistic context, students must take one course each in phonology
and syntax.

The MA programme can be taken full-time over 12 months or part-time
over two years.

NEW MRES PROGRAMME IN SPEECH, LANGUAGE AND COGNITION AT UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE LONDON

Beginning September 2004, the Centre for Human Communication
( http://www.chc.ucl.ac.uk ) at UCL will be offering an
interdisciplinary MRes in Speech, Language and Cognition.
The MRes in Speech, Language and Cognition is aimed at applicants
whose interest in language spans more than one discipline. Building on
a first degree in linguistics, speech sciences, psychology, cognitive
science, or a cognate discipline, students plan their own course of
study (with the guidance of an advisor), selecting from a range of
courses in several different UCL departments. The degree is a
stand-alone 12-month Masters, but is also excellent preparation for
PhD research in a language-related field of study.
