Funding opportunities for MA by Research

The School of Arts is offering full-time Studentships and Bursaries
for MA candidates wishing to enrol for MA study in English Literature
and in English within our programme for MA by Research.

The MA by Research offers the opportunity to undertake postgraduate
work with a view to preparing for further postgraduate study. The aim
is to provide a foundation for further research at doctoral level,
developing the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills for
research by studying within an area of the individual student's
choice.

Applications are invited from students wishing to enrol for the degree
of MA by full-time and part-time study. The successful candidates will
hold either a first class or upper second class honours degree, in
English or a related field and have demonstrable potential in one or
more of the group's existing areas of research strength:

- English Literature and Culture 1500-1700
- English Literature and Culture 1800-2000
- English language (including linguistics, especially sociolinguistics
and pragmatics)

Research expertise of the English Literary Studies group includes
Early modern drama, Early Modern Women's Writing; representation of
animals in the Renaissance; witchcraft texts; court of King James VI
and I; Cultural/literary theory; gender theory; popular fiction.

English Language research interests include pragmatics;
sociolinguistics; stylistics; gender and language; and discourse
analysis.

The studentships provide tuition fees at the EU rate plus an annual
living grant currently £11,000, for one year. The bursaries provide
tuition fees plus a subsidy of £650 towards living expenses.

APPLICATION

All applicants should submit a letter of application (citing two
academic referees), a full CV, and an outline of a research topic of
two A4 sides, double-spaced.  The proposal should:

- Outline the field of inquiry
- Identify the topic and purpose of the study
- Include a short bibliography (no more than one side of A4)

The closing date for applications is Tuesday 7th September 2004.
Interviews will be held sometime in September 2004 and successful
applicants will be expected to take up their awards on 1st October
2004.
