This is a session of the following conference: 9th International
Pragmatics Conference

Meeting Description:

Sükriye Ruhi (Middle East Technical University) and Helen
Spencer-Oatey (University of Cambridge) are proposing a panel on the
topic, ''Identity and the Study of Face and (Im)Politeness:
Interdisciplinary Perspectives'', for the 9th International Pragmatics
Conference at Riva del Garda, Italy, 10-15 July 2005.

The panel will explore the interrelationship between identity
(including self-presentation) and face and (im)politeness, both from a
conceptual point of view and from a data analysis point of view. The
aim will be to gain insights into the topic from different disciplines
(e.g. psychology, sociology, cognitive science, philosophy,
linguistics) and thereby to gain a deeper interdisciplinary
understanding of the impact of identity issues on the
conceptualisation and study of face and (im)politeness.

People interested in contributing to the panel should email their
abstract (in Word or rtf format) both to Sukriye Ruhi
(ruhi at isbank.net.tr) and to Helen Spencer-Oatey (hs343 at cam.ac.uk) no
later than 25 September 2004. Please feel free to send in inquiries
about the panel topic or contributions to the same addresses.

Possible topics for contributions: the performance of identity
(self/group ...) in the management of relations; the interrelationship
between identity and face/(im)politeness; the interplay between
personal identity and group/social identity in interactional
discourse; stability and dynamism in the construction of identity and
the management of face/(im)politeness.

Details of the conference are available at http://webhost.ua.ac.be/tisp/
