We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Hello!

I am a PhD student at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, working on the
comparative analysis of Korean, Japanese and English passives. Since I am
not a native speaker of Japanese, I want to consult some native speakers on
whether I understand the Japanese data (I'm using in my dissertation)
correctly. Right now, I have only 6 questions.

Please email me at heesooclara at yahoo.com if you are willing to share with
me your intuition as a native speaker.

Thank you very much.

Best wishes,

Hee-Soo Kim

Could anyone please provide the exact source for Max Muller's pronouncement:

''To me, an ethnologist who speaks of an Aryan race, Aryan blood, Aryan
eyes and hair, is as great a sinner as a linguist who speaks of as
dolichocephalic dictionary or a brachycephalic grammar .... If I say
Aryans, I mean neither blood nor bones, nor hair, nor culture, I mean
simply those who speak an Aryan language.''

Thanks in advance, Robert Orr
