Meeting Description:

Applications are invited for an interdisciplinary workshop from June
14-25, 2004.  This limited-enrollment workshop will be focused on what
is known currently and what can be discovered through research in the
next four or five years about detecting deception, particularly from a
cross-cultural perspective.  The events of 9/11/01 and sequelae have
brought into stark focus the problem of determining, when appropriate,
whether individuals speaking various languages and coming from various
cultural groups, each with its own traditions, are being truthful or
deceptive.  To address that problem, CASL, whose mission is to address
fundamental problems in language, communication, and culture that
affect national security, is convening an interdisciplinary workshop
from June 14-25, 2004.  The workshop will be focused on what is known
currently and what can be discovered through research in the next four
or five years about detecting deception, particularly from a
cross-cultural perspective.

The workshop will consist of seminars, lectures, discussions, and
individual writing; it will culminate in a detailed report to CASL.
The report will include (1) a selected and critical review of the
literature on detecting deception, including a broad range of work but
with emphasis on research relevant to detecting deception across
languages and cultures, and (2) a proposed agenda for research in the
next 4-5 years on deception detection across languages and cultures.
Pending acceptance of the research agenda by CASL and its sponsors,
workshop attendees subsequently may have the opportunity to
participate in future research on site at CASL or via subcontracts at
their institutions.

Applications are invited for participation in the two-week seminar
from researchers in fields such as, but not limited to, psychology,
linguistics, anthropology, computer science, artificial intelligence,
statistics, and neuroscience.  Spaces are reserved for senior and
junior faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students.  They
will be joined for one to two days at a time by senior distinguished
scientists in relevant areas, as well as by government personnel or
other individuals with relevant real-world experience in detecting
deception.  Funds are available to cover costs of transportation,
lodging, and meals; in addition stipends appropriate for each
individual's academic rank will be provided to all participants.

For best consideration, all materials should be submitted by March 1,
but in any case no later than March 15.  Applications must include the
applicant's complete CV, a 1-3 page statement of the applicant's
relevant background and experience, as well as how s/he intends to
benefit from the workshop, and 2-3 letters of reference from mentors
and/or colleagues (these may be sent separately).  If E-mail is

or foreign language teaching and skill developing and from any
theoretical perspective. Send one copy of a one-page abstract for
review. (There may be an additional page for references.) The abstract
must specify which meeting you wish to present in (Beijing or Shanghai
or both), title of paper, authorâEuro(tm)s name, academic affiliation,
current and summer address, phone and fax number, e-mail, and
audiovisual requests. Abstracts must be on a single page, single
spaced, in 12-point type, with one inch margins. Abstracts may be
submitted via e-mail or mail. If submitted via email, they may be
included in the body of the e-mail message or as an attachment.

8.All presented papers will be published in the Proceedings of the 6th
International Symposium on Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching
one year after the conference. The proceedings will be sent to their
authors by mail.

    9.2. For the Shanghai portion only:  US$500.00

          These fees include US$100.00 for registration and all other
