CFP for Computer Studies in Language and Literature Discussion Group
of MLA

Title: Computing/Theorizing/Communicating

Papers are invited that explore impacts of computing tools (databases,
text analysis software, multimedia, etc.) on theorizing research,
teaching, and communication between language and literature
researchers, students, and the wider community.

Abstracts by 1 Mar 2004; Donald E. Hardy (Don.Hardy at Colostate.edu)

The Executive Committee of the Division for Applied Linguistics in the
MLA invites abstracts for our three sessions at the Philadelphia
convention in Dec. 2004:

1. Research on Internet-Mediated Foreign Language Study

The division invites original research reports on Internet-mediated
foreign language study. The research may represent diverse theoretical
approaches including (but not limited to) interactional
sociolinguistics, systemic functional linguistics, interactionist SLA,
sociocultural theory, and communication theory.

2. Research on Study Abroad

The division invites original research reports on any aspect of study
abroad in any foreign language. We encourage research reports from
diverse theoretical perspectives.

3. Policy Perspectives on Post-Secondary Foreign Language Requirements

The division invites research reports and position papers on how
institutional educational priorities (e.g., internationalization of
the curriculum) and budgetary constraints (e.g., increasing class
sizes, staffing patterns) affect perspectives and policies on the
foreign language requirement.

Please send abstracts of 400 words or less to Julie A. Belz
(jab63 at psu.edu) by February 20, 2004.

Thanks to the financial support of the Flemish Community (BIL
scientific cooperation project 01/33), we have been able to invite
some Romanian outstanding linguists working on the expression of Time
and Space in Romania and abroad:

Larisa Avram
Alexandra Cornilescu

Maria Iliescu
Maria M. Manoliu
Andra Vasilescu
Sanda Reinheimer

Since Reichenbach's (1947) influential study on the linguistic
encoding of temporal relations, much attention has been paid to the
way in which tense is expressed in natural languages. This has
resulted in studies investigating temporal relations, mainly concerned
with comparative aspects of tenses, such as the opposition between
perfective and imperfective tenses. More recently, efforts have been
made to address temporal relations not only with regard to their
interpretative aspect, but also with respect to their syntactic
encodings. In addition, current research aims at studying the more
fundamental connection between nouns and verbs, in particular with
respect to the expression of time and space: the way in which the
interpretation of tense is determined by the morphological expression
of quantification on the subject, cross-linguistic variation
w.r.t. the interaction between nominal and temporal quantification,
etc.

We welcome 30 min. presentations on issues related either to the
general topic of the conference, or the special workshop on
Romanian. You might consider one of the following topics (the list is
not exhaustive):

1. The relationship between Tense, Mode and Aspect. One or several
distinct notions?
2. Syntax, semantics and pragmatics of Concordantia
temporum. Comparison between languages.
3. Historical raising of the forms. Evolution in the uses.
4. Parallels between the expression of time and the expression of
space.
5. The interaction between verbal and nominal quantification

Presentations will be 20 minutes long, plus 10 minutes for discussion.
There will also be poster presentations.

Conference languages are English and French.

SUBMISSIONS:
Please submit an anonymous one-page abstract, spaced in 1.5 lines and
in 10-pt Times font (excl.references) as an attachment (Word or RTF)
