Meeting Description:

This one-day workshop on Faroese will immediately follow a two day
conference on Faroese Studies (June 19-20) at the University of
Iceland (see http://www.hugvis.hi.is). The aim of this workshop is
twofold: First, to give an overview of previous studies of Faroese,
and second, to discuss some ongoing research on the language. In
recent years, Faroese has caught the attention of scholars as a
particularly interesting language from a diachronic and
cross-linguistic perspective. Faroese shares many inflectional and
syntactic features with Modern Icelandic (its closest relative) but it
has also innovated in various ways. Currently, Faroese is undergoing
syntactic changes (e.g. in verb raising and case marking) that move it
further from Icelandic and closer to Mainland Scandinavian. It is not
clear to what extent these changes can be linked to changes in the
inflectional system of Faroese, while the lack of historical evidence
makes it difficult to resolve the issue. It is therefore hoped that
the workshop will provide a forum for the exchange and development of
new ideas on these changes as well as other aspects of Faroese.  Call
for Papers:

We welcome abstracts for papers which address any issue in Faroese
grammar, particularly in the area of syntax and inflectional
morphology.

Speakers:

First Session: Overview of some existing research on Faroese: Speakers
will include Michael Barnes (University College London), Jeffrei
Henriksen (Faroe Islands) and Hoskuldur Thrainsson (University of
Iceland). Second Session: Ongoing research on Faroese: Speakers will
include Ellen Woolford (University of Massachusetts, Amherst), Hjalmar
Petersen (Frodskaparsetur Foeroyja, Torshavn) and Thorhallur
Eythorsson (University of Iceland).

Abstract Guidelines:

We are solicting abstracts for 40-minute talks relevant to the topic
of the workshop. Abstracts should be in 12pt font or larger,
consisting of no more than 2 pages (including data and
references). Abstracts should be submitted electronically in Word
(.doc) or Adobe Acrobat (pdf.) format to: jj at hi.is.  The author(s) of
the abstract should not be identified in the abstract itself; the body
of the submission message should include the title of the abstract,
the name(s) of the author(s), the(ir) affilitation, and e-mail
address(es).

Corpora), which will be held at the University of Granada, from the

The organising committee and the Department of English and German
Languages of the University of Granada invite you to participate in
the Sixth International Conference of TALC (Teaching and Language
Corpora), which will be held at the University of Granada, from the

The sixth international TALC conference will bring together
practitioners and theorists with a common interest in the use of
corpus tools for such purposes as:
First and second language teaching and learning.
Language awareness raising.
Teaching languages for specific purposes.
Student-centered linguistic investigation.
Interpreting and translation studies.
Cultural and historical studies.
Teaching literature.

The following scholars have already confirmed their participation as
keynote speakers:

Stig Johansson (Oslo, Norway): «Using Corpora: From Learning to
Research».
Bill Louw (Zimbabwe): « Truth, Literary Worlds and Devices as

TALC 2004 invites proposals for position papers, reports of work in
progress, case-histories of successful corpus applications, and
introductions to relevant new resources. Proposals may be for
20-minute presentations, posters, or software demonstrations. We also
welcome proposals for longer pre-conference tutorials and workshops.

Submissions: Abstracts (with a maximum of 500 words) should reach Luis
Quereda (talc6 at ugr.es) before 15 March 2004 (new extended deadline) as
a Word or .pdf attachment. All proposals will be reviewed. Authors of
those proposals accepted for inclusion will be notified by 15 April,
and the programme will be finalised during May 2004.

All submissions should include name(s) and institutional
affiliation(s) of the author(s), as well as e-mail addresses. Please
also indicate if you will need an overhead projector or any other
equipment for your presentation. Abstract forms can be found in the

Venue: TALC 2004 will be held at the University of Granada, founded in
1531, under the initiative of the Emperor Carlos V, by means of a
Papal Bull from Pope Clemente VII. With 472 years of tradition, the
University of Granada has been an exceptional witness to history, as
its influence in the city's social and cultural environment grew until
it was to become, over a period of almost five centuries, an
intellectual and cultural nucleus in Southern Spain in its own
right. The university centres and buildings are located in various
places in the urban area of Granada, giving the city its particular
university style, since of the 270,000 inhabitants of the capital,
60,000 are university students. But Granada also fulfils other special
requirements: historically it is the last redoubt of Islam in Western
Europe (the Alhambra and the Generalife are samples of the splendour
of this civilisation); Granada is also a Renaissance city (the
Hospital Real or the Cathedral are only two examples of Granada's
well-preserved historical heritage). To speak of Granada is,
therefore, to speak of an exceptional geography, midway between the
warm sea and the high mountains: 60 minutes by car from the province
of Granada's beaches, 75 minutes from Malaga, and 30 minutes from the
Sierra Nevada ski resort (at a height of 3,400 metres).

Registration: The Conference fee is Euro 80 (Students: Euro 30) if you
register before 1 May, 2004, and Euro 90 after that date. Registration
for pre-Conference workshops is Euro 50 (Students: Euro
25). Registration includes conference materials, welcome reception
(including a concert and drinks), coffee breaks and a night visit to
