Subject: Summary

Our query (Linguist 15.126) was to get some information about the
language on the Internet, and especially what kind of sources there
are about this subject. We got many answers with different sources and
here are some of them:

ARNAUT, G.
INTERNET CHAT ROOMS BECOMING A POPULAR FORUM FOR BUSINESS
(http://www.nytimes.com/library/cyber/week/012698chat.html )
     THE NEW YORK TIMES
     26-01-1998 CYBER TIMES

Students have also written many papers about this subject and here are
some examples:

Vsevolod Kapatsinski has written a paper about "Names in Russian
Online Discussion: Russian-English Contact on the Internet"

Erin Tavano has written a paper about turn-taking in chat rooms.

A student at the University of Szeged, Hungary has written an
MA-thesis on "An analysis of the language of chatrooms: Spoken or
written style"'

A student at Northern Arizona University has constructed a corpus of
chat room language that is nearly 500,000 words.

Judith Donath has written two interesting papers in this area:

Judith Donath, Fernanda Viégas. The Chat Circles Series:
derstrExplorations in Designing Abstract Graphical Communication
Interfaces. Designing Interactive Systems Conference (DIS). London,
England. June 2002.

Judith Donath. A Semantic Approach to Visualizing Online
Conversations. In Communications of the ACM Volume 45, Issue 4, April
2002.

There are a lot of books about this subject too:

play and identity on Internet Relay Chat. Journal of Computer-Mediated
Communication, 1(2).
