We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Subject: Mac Unicode IPA Fonts and Word Processing Software

I am looking for advice on using Unicode-compliant IPA fonts in word
processing software on the Macintosh.

Since many linguists use Macs, what programs and fonts do you use for
writing papers? How about for other types of linguistic data entry?
MS Word for Mac doesn't support Unicode fonts like Arial Sans, and
other fonts that work well on a Mac (like STEDT, for instance) are not
Unicode compliant, and are therefore not ''Best Practice'' (for more
on Best Practice, please see http://emeld.org/school ), and risk
becoming defunct.

Thank you in advance,
Andrea Berez

Subject: Chat rooms and Anglicisms

In a previous issue we asked about studies of the language in chat
rooms, and got many sources about this subject: a summary is
forthcoming.

We are going to make a comparative analysis of the use of Anglicisms
in two Finnish chat rooms, one in Finnish and the other in Swedish.
We would like to know if somebody has done a similar research as the
one we are going to do.

Thank You for Your help!
