UIL OTS YEARBOOK 2003

Edited by Willemijn Heeren, Dimitra Papangeli and Evangelia Vlachou
Published by Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS (UiL OTS),
University of Utrecht

We are very happy to present the UiL OTS Yearbook 2003. This year's
volume is a collection of papers that were presented at the
Uiltjesdagen 2003, the yearly PhD meeting at Utrecht University. It
contains seven papers by young linguists who were working on their PhD
dissertation at UiL OTS at the time of the meeting, and serves as a
nice example of the kind of research that is being carried out by UiL
OTS - at the PhD level. There is one extra paper, written by visiting
researchers.

The volume begins with the 'guest' paper, by Cole, Hermon and Aman, on
Wh-questions in Malay. The next paper in the volume, by
Botwinik-Rotem, is on PP-verbs and the phenomenon of obligatory Ps,
followed by Heeren's discussion on the perceptual development of a new
phoneme contrast in children. Olsvay contributes a paper on the syntax
of operators, in which he gives an overt movement account of this
phenomenon. Papangeli provides a syntactic analysis of impersonals,
Rákosi discusses comitative arguments in Hungarian and Sadeh Leicht
accounts for the sporadic occurrence of the garden path
effect. Finally, Vlachou deals with maximality and the concessivity
criterion.

We hope that the readers will enjoy all the papers and at the same
time appreciate the kind of research that is being done at UiL OTS by
the young scholars.
