We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Hello.

I have two questions about Bedouin Arabic.

1. I noticed in some sources (e.g. Ingham in Dialectologia Arabica
1995), that, in Bedouin Arabic, k and g(<classical q), can be
palatalized. Could anyone tell me if this is a regular change and in
what surroundings it occurs, and how is the palatalized g<qaf
different from Classical jim. Also, how universal is this change
among dialects?

2. I also wonder how different are ''Bedouin dialects'' of North
Africa from those of the Peninsula. Especially, if they are more like
Eastern dialects or more like western North African regarding
a. merger of all short vowels, b. confusion of long and short, and
c. typical North African vocabulary.

I will be grateful for your responses.
