The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

University or Organization: University of Groningen
Department: Communication and Information Sciences
Rank of Job: Associate Professor + Assistant Professor
Specialty Areas: Discourse Analysis, Org./Intercultural Communication,
		 Computational Linguistics

Description:

The Communication and Information Sciences program in the Faculty of
Arts has been very successful in attracting students. The Faculty has
therefore decided to augment the academic staff with two permanent
positions, one at associate- and one at assistant-professor level. The
teaching falls under the Department of Communication and Information
Sciences (CIW). The research will take place in the Discourse and
Communication Group of the Centre for Language and Cognition Groningen
(CLCG).

Education and research in Communication Studies at the University of
Groningen focus on communication within the context of society
(institutions and media), which is studied from a discourse
perspective. The research concentrates especially on structures and
patterns (routines) in interactions and in texts, and also on verbal
and non-verbal signals guiding the interpretation process. The nature
of the object 'discourse' demands a multidisciplinary approach in
which linguistic descriptions are connected with the communicative
functions of discourse and with the situational, institutional, and
cultural context within which the communication process takes
place. Within the educational program the discourse profile can be
recognized in the three specializations within the renewed Master's
program: Language, Culture, and Organization (organizational
communication, intercultural communication), Language, Image, and
Sound (multimodal communication, semiotics, critical discourse
analysis) and Computer-Mediated Communication (communication with and
by means of computers, computational models). Extra academic staff is
needed especially in the domains of Language, Culture, and
Organization and Computer-Mediated Communication. We are therefore
looking for enthusiastic candidates who have an outstanding academic
reputation in the field of internal, external, or intercultural
organizational communication or in the field of digital communication,
such as websites, e-mail, computer-supported cooperative work, and
natural language dialog systems.
