We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Language and gender in the Swazi (or other Bantu or African) legal
context.

Your help is much appreciated.

Subject: Reconstruction in Relative Constructions

I'm working on reconstruction effects in certain constructions,
including relative constructions. I am looking for native speakers'
judgments on the following examples, and references discussing similar
data. I am very appreciative of any help in advance.

(i) a. I'd purchase the picture of Picasso that he painted at
        the age of 40.
    b. I'd purchase the picture of Picasso that the curator
said (that) he painted at the age of 40.
        (Picasso = he)
(ii)a. The false accusations of Mary by himself that I think
that she'd better not know that her ex boyfriend, John,
told many of her friends seem to be accepted by some.
(Mary = she, himself = John)
    b. The false accusations of Mary by himself that I think
that she'd better not know that everyone told John, her
fiance, seem to have affected his final decision.
(Mary = she, himself = everyone)
