The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

Description:

Industry-Linked Post-Doc Position in Language Technology

Ref No.: 001695

Applications are invited for a 3-year industry-linked postdoctoral
research position at the Department of Computer Science, University
College Dublin, in a research initiative in the area of multilingual
speech and language technology funded by Science Foundation
Ireland. Ubiquitous language technology concerns the development of
language technologies for different purposes on different platforms so
that they can be made available to everybody at all times rather than
to a select group for specific purposes. MUSTER - Multilingual
Ubiquitous Speech Technology: Enhanced and Rethought combines a
rethinking of current approaches to speech and language technologies
with an enhancement based on information of varying levels of
granularity paving the way for the development of robust multilingual
applications which are easily scalable. The studentships are funded as
part of a collaboration between the MUSTER project and the IBM
Software Lab in Dublin. The MUSTER team at University College Dublin
is made up of researchers from computational linguistics, speech
technology, experimental phonetics and computer science. The IBM team
develops a linguistic analysis toolkit which is used to provide
linguistic capabilities (e.g. segmentation, morphological analysis,
spell correction etc.) to a wide variety of IBM products
(e.g. knowledge management, machine translation, text categorization
etc.). These tools support over 30 languages from all parts of the
world. Due to the demanding environment in which these tools work, the
toolkit is required to be very robust and fast.

The defined area of research for the post-doctoral position is the
automatic acquisition of structured multilingual knowledge for speech
and language applications. The research will focus on integrating
techniques which are being developed in the MUSTER project with
ongoing product-based research at IBM Dublin Software Lab.

The successful candidate will be expected to be have a PhD degree in
Computer Science or related discipline and expertise in machine
learning, finite state techniques and state-of-the-art computational
linguistic models. Previous publications in a related area are
essential. The successful candidate will work as part of the MUSTER
team and spend a proportion of their time at the IBM Lab. Further
information on the MUSTER project, together with publications, can be
found at the project web page: http://muster.ucd.ie

Candidates should submit a full CV, list of publications and names of
two referees by Wednesday 30th June 2004 to
