Meeting Description:

The Between Stress and Tone conference will focus on the variety of
word-prosodic systems. Particular attention will be paid to systems
that challenge the typological classification into word stress,
lexical pitch-accent and tone. We will also invite studies that
discuss the interaction between the phonetic encoding of word-prosodic
features and utterance-level prosody.

>>From 16-18 June 2005, a conference entitled Between Stress and Tone
(BeST) will take place in Leiden (The Netherlands). The theme of the
conference is word-prosodic systems. We are now inviting proposals for
papers to be presented at the conference.

BeST will focus on the variety of word-prosodic systems. Particular
attention will be paid to systems that challenge the typological
classification into word stress, lexical pitch-accent and tone. At the
same time, we invite studies that discuss the interaction between the
phonetic encoding of word-prosodic features and utterance-level
prosody. There are four themes:

*Word-prosodic typology (invited speaker: Larry Hyman)
*Word-prosodic features from a phonological perspective (invited
speaker: Harry van der Hulst)
*Word-prosodic features from a phonetic perspective (invited speaker:
Jerold Edmondson)
*Variation and change in word-prosodic systems (invited speaker: Jose
I. Hualde)

Abstracts

Abstracts, in English, should be submitted as an attachment to an
email message. The abstract should be in MS Word (*.doc) or Rich Text
Format (*.rtf). It should consist of up to 2 A4 pages, including
examples, graphs and references. The font should be Times New Roman,
12 point; left and right margins should be 3 cm. The transcription of
examples should adhere to the IPA standard if at all possible; IPA
symbols in the abstract should be from the SIL Doulos IPA 93 font
set. Crucially, the author(s) should not be identified in the
abstract. Instead, the name(s), affiliation(s), and contact details of
the author(s) should be included in the body of the email message.

Abstracts will be subject to blind peer review by the scientific
committee, with each paper being reviewed by a panel of at least two
specialists on the scientific committee. Papers will be allocated to
oral or poster sessions, on the basis of two criteria: (1) the extent
to which the paper relates to the topic of the conferences and one of
the conference themes, and (2) the scientific quality of the paper as
established by the reviewers. Abstracts should be sent to

Important dates
The deadline for submission of abstracts is 1 of November, 2004.
Notifications of acceptance / rejection will be sent by 1 of February,
2005.
The conference will take place from 16 to 18 of June, 2005

Presentation of papers

All papers will be presented in plenary sessions, in English. Invited
speakers will have 45 minutes for oral presentation and discussion of
their paper. Other orally presented papers will have 30 minutes,
including discussion time. Poster papers will be introduced in
five-minute oral prÃ©cis presentations. The organizers will ensure
optimal conditions and sufficient time for the poster session.

Output

The compilation of all accepted abstracts will be distributed as
proceedings among the participants at the start of the conference. In
addition, a thematic issue of the journal Phonology, dedicated to the
typology of word-prosodic systems, will be published in conjunction
with the conference. Please note that submission to this thematic
issue will not be restricted to participants. A call for papers for
the thematic issue will be issued in the course of July 2004. This
call will be distributed via the LinguistList, the conference website,
the journal website, and other channels.

LOT Summer School 2005

The conference will take place in conjunction with the LOT Summer
School 2005, organized by the Netherlands Graduate School of
Linguistics (LOT). This event will also take place in Leiden. The
programme for the week immediately following the conference (20-24
June 2005) will include various intensive courses on topics of
interest to the participants. Among others, there will be a course on
methodology in relation to the study of word prosody, taught by Jerold
Edmondson (University of Texas at Arlington). Detailed information on
the LOT Summer/Winter School programme can be found at:

on the programme for the Summer School 2005 will appear on that site
in due course.

Participation grants

A limited number of grants will be available to support the
participation of linguists whose abstract has been accepted, and who
have no or limited access to institutional funding sources in their
home country. At the time of the notification of acceptance,
participants who are in this situation will be invited to submit a
request for support.

CALL FOR PAPERS

LAGB Satellite Workshop on Perfectivity and Telicity:
Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005
Cambridge University

Abstract submissions are invited for a one-day workshop on the
interaction of aspect and aktionsart across languages, sponsored by
the British Academy. The workshop will focus particularly on
perfective viewpoint aspect and telic aktionsart and their
interaction, from semantic, syntactic and psycholinguistic
viewpoints. The conference will take place at Fitzwilliam College,
Cambridge, on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, the day after the annual
Linguistics Association of Great Britain meeting at the same location.

Four of eight speakers will be selected by competitive abstract
review.  Talks will be 40 minutes each, with 20 minutes for
discussion. A proceedings volume with a major publisher is planned.

subject of the message should specify ''Workshop Abstract'', and the
body should include the following information: author's name(s),
affiliation, e-mail address, and title of abstract. Abstracts may be
up to two pages long (using 1'' margins on all sides and 12pt font
size), including examples and references. Non-standard fonts and
software should be avoided and all fonts should be embedded in the PDF
document.

Deadline for receipt of abstracts: January 31, 2005. Notification of
acceptance: March 15, 2005.

Drafts of accepted papers will required in July 2005, for circulation
among workshop participants.
