Meeting Description:

The conference is organized jointly with the Fifth Nordic conference
on Language and Gender and wants to promote discussion and
collaboration among linguists and social scientists interested in
issues of gender and politeness in relation to language and discourse
in a variety of models and applications. The conference serves as a
forum for promoting discussion and collaboration among linguists and
social scientists interested in issues of gender and politeness in
relation to language and discourse in a variety of models and
applications. The joint conference has the title International
Conference on Language, Politeness, and Gender: The Pragmatic Roots.

We invite 2-page abstracts of original research on any aspect relevant
to the theme of the conference.  Plenary speakers include Robin
Lakoff, Susan Herring, Yoshiko Matsumoto, Tove Bull, Arja
Piirainen-Marsh.  Final deadline for abstracts: April 2, 2004. Please
submit your abstract electronically to clpg-2004 at helsinki.fi Abstracts
will be refereed; authors will be notified of acceptance by April 19,

This is a session of the following conference: World Congress on
Applied Linguistics

Meeting Description:

New horizons for applied linguistics: language in its full social and
ecological context The 14th World Congress of Applied Linguistics will
be held in Madison, Wisconsin, USA from July 24-29 2005. Among the 27
'areas of interest' in the conference is Language and Ecology. This
exciting new area of applied linguistics includes investigation of the
role of language in ecological destruction, the search for alternative
discourses which contribute to ecological harmony, and research into
ecoliteracy in language teaching. Papers dealing with these aspects or
any relations between language, ideology, society and ecology are most
welcome.

special symposium as follows:

Special Symposium:

Title: ''New horizons for applied linguistics: language in its full
social and ecological context''

Theme: There has been a general tendency within linguistics to move
away from analysing language in isolation, towards analysis within a
full social context. This has helped to expose the way that language
influences and shapes the structures which make up society. However,
it is possible to go further and analyse the influence of language on
the ecosystems within which societies exist and on which all life
depends. This symposium will explore the new horizons of applied
linguistics theoretically and practically, and will critically
consider the integrated set of social and ecological values of the
Earth Charter (www.earthcharter.org).

Description: The three hour symposium will consist of 5 short paper
presentations related to the above theme (20 minutes plus 10 minutes
for questions) and a 30 minute panel discussion. If you would like to
present a paper at the symposium then please get in touch with the
