With the reissue of this monograph, an instrumental part of the
development of both moraic phonology and prosodic morphology becomes
available once again. This essential text presents a comprehensive
treatment of syllable weight in phonology and its consequences for
weight-related phenomena, proposing that the basic tier consists of
weight units that are equivalent to the moras of traditional
synchronic and diachronic phonology. Based in part on the unusual
Gokana language of Nigeria, which may lack syllables entirely, Hyman
argues that using the proposed moraic representations allows us to
handle many apparently syllable-based phenomena without syllables.
