non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international

Subject: Sociolinguistics, Text/Corpus Linguistics: Canada Research Chair, Tier II, Memorial University of Newfoundland, NL, Canada

University or Organization: Memorial University of Newfoundland
Department: Linguistics, English, French, or Folklore
Job Rank: Canada Research Chair, Tier II
Specialty Areas: Sociolinguistics; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Description:

Memorial University of Newfoundland invites applications for a Canada Research
Chair (Tier II) in Regional Language and Oral Text. (The term 'regional' in this
description refers to the subnational as well as the purely local, and 'oral
text' encompasses all forms of orality and oral transmission of language.) The
Chair will be filled by a rising new scholar who possesses an outstanding record
of research achievement in one or more of the following disciplines:
variationist linguistics, social or regional dialectology, sociophonetics,
folklore and oral tradition, corpus linguistics, or related areas. The Chair
will enhance Memorial University's international profile in his or her research
areas, building on the existing research strengths of the university in the
field of Regional Language and Oral Text. Ideally, he or she will possess
expertise in techniques for the digital rendering and analysis of text, and will
link ongoing efforts in preservation of oral culture to emergent standards in
textual and acoustic technologies.

The successful applicant will develop a research program that includes one or
more language varieties specific to the region of Atlantic Canada, with a
particular focus on the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. He or she will
play a leadership role in integrating and stimulating interdisciplinary
research. The Chair will also participate in the teaching programs of the
Faculty at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and will take a leading role
in the mentoring of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Though an
appointment in the department of Linguistics is likely, primary appointment may
be in any one of the four departments sponsoring this position (English Language
and Literature, French and Spanish, Folklore or Linguistics), with the
possibility of cross or joint appointment to a second sponsoring department.

Tier II appointees are outstanding emerging researchers who exhibit the
potential to lead their research fields. Rank (normally at the level of
Assistant or Associate Professor) will be commensurate with qualifications and
experience. Details on the Canada Research Chair program can be found at
(http://www.chairs.gc.ca). For further information about the CRC program at
Memorial University, please visit our web site at
(http://www.mun.ca/research/crc/). Information on the Faculty of Arts at
Memorial University is available at http://www.mun.ca/arts.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests
and plans, a teaching dossier, and the names of three referees. Consideration
of applications will begin February 15 2005, and continue until the position is
filled. Memorial University is committed to employment equity and encourages
applications from qualified women and men, visible minorities, aboriginal people
and persons with disabilities. There is no restriction with regard to
nationality or residence.

Memorial University has a fifty-year history of research excellence in the
investigation of the languages and oral culture of the province. The university
possesses important archival repositories of local speech varieties and genres,
along with technical support and an excellent library collection. As the
largest university in Atlantic Canada and the province's only university,
Memorial plays an integral role in the educational and cultural life of
Newfoundland and Labrador. Offering diverse undergraduate and graduate programs
to nearly 18,000 students, Memorial provides a distinctive and stimulating
environment for learning in St. John's, a safe, friendly city with great
historic charm, a vibrant cultural life, and easy access to a wide range of
outdoor activities.
