Announcement:
The Extensive Reading Foundation 2004 Language Learner
Literature Award Winners

The announcement of the winning books was made at the Japan
Association for Language Teaching International Conference
(JALT 2004) in Nara on November 20. For full details, including
a list of runners-up, visit the ERF homepage:

http://www.erfoundation.org

The Winning Books
The Extensive Reading Foundation takes pleasure in announcing
the first four winners of the Language Learner Literature Award.

Young Learners
The Kindest Family. Retold by Krista Bell. Illustrated by Xiangyi
Mo and Jingwen Wang.
Thomson Learning: PM Plus Story Books Level 20.

Adolescents & Adults
Beginner
Jojo's Story by Antoinette Moses. Illustrations by Jason Walker.
Cambridge University Press: Cambridge English Readers, Level 2.

Intermediate
A Kiss Before Dying by Ira Levin. Retold by F.H. Cornish.
Illustrated by Shirley Bellwood. Macmillan Education:
Macmillan Guided Readers,Intermediate Level.

Advanced
Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis De Bernieres.
Retold by Mary Tomalin.
Pearson Education: Penguin Readers, Level 6.

The jury had the following comments on the winning books.

The Kindest Family: The illustrations are beautiful and intriguing,
and the heartwarming universal theme can be well understood by
readers of any cultural background.

Jojo's Story: This is an outstanding book written in a very moving
way. It shows clearly how good stories can be written within a
very limited vocabulary.

A Kiss Before Dying: This book is fast-paced and contains plenty
of dialogue, two ingredients that keep learners interested. Besides,
a good 'whodunnit' is always fun to read.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin: The characters come to life and the plot
is compelling. Though we would have liked more support for the
reader--a time line, a map, a list of characters--, in the final analysis
this is a first-class read.

By regularly recognizing books of outstanding quality and appeal,
the award aims to support the development of language learner
literature in English, and to encourage extensive reading in language
teaching. Publishers can display the award information on the covers
of their finalist and winning books. In time, we hope that the award
and its logo will become a seal of quality for teachers and students
looking for good books to read.

The ERF thanks the publishers who nominated books, the members
of the jury, and all those who voted in this year's award. The nomination
and voting procedures for the 2005 Language Learner Literature Award
will be posted on the ERF website shortly.
