Ninth Biennial University of Seville Conference on Applied Linguistics
(ELIA IX) 

The Research Group The English Language in University Settings of the
College of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics at the University of
Seville, is pleased to announce the Ninth ELIA Conference, to be held in
Seville, Spain, on March 15-16, 2005. The main theme of the conference will
be Motivations, Attitudes & Anxieties in Foreign/Second Language
Acquisition, Teaching, and Use.

Renowned national and international scholars in the broad domain of applied
linguistics have taken part in the eight previous ELIA conferences and have
made a significant contribution to ELIA's success.  The keynote speakers
for this year's conference include Dr. Zoltán Dörnyei (University of
Nottingham, UK), Dr. Tim Murphy (Dokkyo University, Japan) and Dr. Jane
Arnold (University of Seville, Spain).

In accordance with the main theme of this year's conference, proposals
related to any dimension of L2 motivations, attitudes and anxieties will be
given preference. Proposals based on other applied linguistics topics
central to ELIA, that is, the teaching, learning/acquisition and discursive
uses of English, either independently or in contact with some other
language, will also be considered.  Proposals related to the above
mentioned theme and/or fields that deal with Spanish as a target language
are also welcome. 

Those interested in taking part as speakers are requested to consider the
following information:

1.SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS AND DEADLINE: Proposals for papers and workshops are
invited in English or Spanish. Please send the relevant proposal form (provided
by elia at siff.us.es), an abstract, and a sequential outline of the
presentation (see additional information on the form) to Secretaría de ELIA
either by regular or electronic mail.  The deadline for submission is
January 7, 2005.

2.NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE:  A written acceptance or refusal of proposals will
be sent by postal or e-mail the week of January 17-21, 2005. 

3.PAYMENT METHOD:  Once a proposal has been accepted, payment must be made
promptly by bank transfer (payment by credit card is not accepted). The
following information must be specified on the transfer form: Seville Bank:
Santander Central Hispano. Bank account no.: 0049.2588.70.2414250158. 
Subject: ELIA Conference (see fees below). 

Please send a copy of the bank transfer to Secretaría de ELIA in Seville by
February 21, 2005.  The reception of this copy will confirm your
participation. 

4.ATTENDEES: Attendees --both in-service L2 professionals and full-time
students at Spanish universities-- should also pay by bank transfer as
indicated above (# 3); the completed application form (provided by
elia at siff.us.es) together with a copy of the transfer must be sent to
Secretaría de ELIA  no later than March 14, 2005. 

5.CONFERENCE FEES:

Speakers:  80 euros (US $100 approx.)
Attendees (Non-student status):  40 euros
Full-time students (at Spanish universities):  20 euros 

Please note that registration will not be valid until payment has been made
and a copy of the bank transfer has been received by the organizing committee.

6.PUBLICATION: A selection of the papers presented at the conference will
be published in the sixth edition of the Spanish journal Estudios de
Lingüística Inglesa Aplicada (ELIA). 

Participation is open to all those interested in the conference theme as
well as in applied linguistics in general. The relevant forms (provided by

identity with a special focus on the postcolonial era. The domain is quite
open and involves actors in cross-disciplinary studies: anthropology,

9. What Language for Postcolonial Literature: Linguistic Flexibilities in
Post-Colonial Writing?
10. Language Usage and the Issue of Inter-Cultural Relationship in
Multi-Lingual Societies.
11. Mother-Tongue Integrity and Official Language(s) Hegemony.
12. Pidgin English, Lingua Franca and Cultural Identity in Postcolonial
Cameroon.
13. The Pedagogy of Postcolonial Identity
14. Panel: English as a G. C. E. 'A' Level Subject
