Second Call for Abstracts

Members and non-members wishing to present a paper at ALT VI are asked to
e-mail a one-page abstract to the chair of the program committee, Lindsay
Whaley, to reach him no later than January 1, 2005. A second page may be
included with the abstract listing data. The abstract itself should
contain no identification of the author. A separate page should indicate
the title of the abstract, the name(s) of the author(s), and one mailing
address, with telephone, fax, and e-mail address as available.

The committee strongly encourages submissions by e-mail (preferably with
the abstract in pdf format and author information as part of the e-mail
text), but abstracts may also be sent by fax. Authors are asked to check
their pdf files carefully to ensure that special characters are embedded
properly.

Submissions should be sent to:
lindsay.whaley at dartmouth.edu
(fax number: 1-603-646-9288)

The time allotted for presentation and discussion is 30 minutes. Members
may also submit abstracts for symposia, including the names of participants
and the amount of time requested. Participants may not be involved in more
than two abstracts, of which at most one may be single-authored. English is
the preferred language at the conference. Talks in other languages will be
accepted only at the discretion of the program committee.

By February 1, 2005 the program committee will convey its decision on
acceptance of papers to those submitting abstracts. The committee
consists of Balthasar Bickel, David Gil, Aditi Lahiri, Brian Migliazza, Uri
Tadmor and Lindsay Whaley (chair).

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

The ALT has a limited amount of funds to provide partial support for a
small number of participants attending the ALT VI meeting.

Financial support for ALT VI will be awarded on the basis of the following
two factors: (a) high quality of abstract; and (b) financial need of applicant.

Persons wishing to apply for financial support should include an
application for financial support when submitting their abstract. The
application should consist of a brief (one paragraph) statement explaining
why the applicant considers himself/herself to be in need of financial
assistance. No applications for financial support will be considered after
the January 1 deadline.

The ALT funds are intended for scholars from developing countries and for
students anywhere. Currently-employed professional linguists from affluent
developed countries should not apply.

21-22 July 2005

Call for Abstracts

Following ALT tradition, the 6th Biennial Meeting of the Association for
Linguistic Typology, to take place in Padang on 21-25 July 2005, will begin
with a workshop on local languages, which, in the present case, will be
taken to mean the languages of Sumatra.

In addition, a couple of talks will be concerned with typologically
interesting non-Austronesian languages adjacent to Sumatra, in peninsular
Malaysia and the Andaman Islands.

The workshop will take place on the afternoon of Thursday 21 July and the
morning of Friday 22 July. Thursday afternoon will consist of general
introductory overview talks, while Friday morning will feature more
specific talks on particular linguistic topics.

The programme for the workshop is largely by invitation; however, a few
slots remain open for submitted abstracts.

Invited speakers who have confirmed their participation in the workshop:

Anvita Abbi, Karl Anderbeck, Lea Brown, Niclas Burenhult, Peter Cole,
Gabriella Hermon, Uri Tadmor.

Persons wishing to present a paper at the workshop are invited to submit an
abstract to David Gil, to reach him before 1 January 2005. Submissions
should be electronic, preferably in pdf format, and of approximately one
page in length.

Papers at the workshop should be concerned with one or more of the
languages of Sumatra. (For the purposes of the workshop, Sumatra is
understood to include also offshore islands such as Nias, Mentawai and
Enggano to the west, and the Riau archipelago to the east.) Papers should
be of general interest for linguists who are not specialists in the region,
and should be presented in English.

Participants presenting a paper at the Workshop on the Languages of Sumatra
may also submit a (different) paper for presentation at the general ALT VI
meeting.
