Linguistic Sub-Fields(s): Computational Linguistics

Meeting Description:

Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing (RANLP) is one of the
best-established and competitive European NLP conferences. It is held
biennially in Bulgaria and grew out from the international summer schools
''Contemporary topics in Computational Linguistics'' organised for many
years as international training events. The RANLP conferences in 1995,
1997, 2001, and 2003 had invited talks by leading names in NLP and accepted
papers of high quality, rigorously reviewed by an international Programme
Committee of well-known experts. The conferences also featured tutorials on
''hot'' NLP topics delivered by leading researchers. RANLP 2005 will be
accompanied for the first time by post-conference workshops. Volumes with
selected and revised papers from the conference are traditionally published
by John Benjamins Publishing (Amsterdam/Philadelphia) in the ''Current
Issues in Linguistic Theories'' series (CILT volumes 136, 189, 260).
RANLP-01 and RANLP-03 were partially supported by the European Commission.
RANLP-05 is under negotiation for funding as a Marie Curie large conference.

TOPICS:

RANLP focuses on computational aspects of natural language processing. We
encourage the representation of a broad range of areas including but not
limited to: pragmatics, discourse, semantics, syntax, and the lexicon;
phonetics, phonology, and morphology; text understanding and generation;
multilingual NLP; machine translation, machine-aided translation,
translation aids and tools; corpus-based language processing; machine
learning applied to language processing, supervised and unsupervised
approaches; POS tagging; parsing; electronic dictionaries; knowledge
acquisition; terminology; word-sense disambiguation; anaphora resolution;
information retrieval; information extraction; text summarisation; term
recognition; text categorisation; question-answering; information
structure; dialog and multi-modal systems; speech processing;
computer-aided language learning; language resources; evaluation;
theoretical and application-oriented NLP.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:

   Ido Dagan  (Bar-Illan University, Israel)
   Robert Dale  (Macquarie University, Australia)
   Anne de Roeck (Open University, UK)
   Ralf Grishman (New York University, USA)

SCHEDULE:

   Submission deadline: End of April/beginning of May 2005
                            (the conference web site will have updated info)

CONFERENCE VENUE:

RANLP-05 will be held in the picturesque resort of Borovets. Located in the
Rila mountains, it is one of the best known ski and tourist resorts in
South-East Europe. Hotel Samokov, the conference venue, offers excellent
study and leisure facilities. Borovets is 1 hour by car from Sofia and 2
hours from Plovdiv with international airports in both cities serving as
arrival/departure points.

THE TEAM BEHIND RANLP:

Galia Angelova - Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (Organising Committee Chair)
Kalina Bontcheva - Univ of Sheffield, UK
Ruslan Mitkov - Univ of Wolverhampton, UK (Program Committee Chair)
Nicolas Nicolov - IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, USA (CILT volume editor)
