Meeting Description:

The Annual Conference on Teaching Spanish to Native Speakers is held annually in
Las Cruces, NM.  The Conference is dedicated to the dissemination of information
regarding issues, methods, materials, and research concerning the development of
Spanish language skills among individuals of Spanish-speaking backgrounds.  The
conference is open to community members, teachers of all levels (K-12, Adult
Basic Education, Community College, University), and researchers who wish to
share and learn about the unique challenges of instructing this diverse group of
language learners. 

Conference Co-Chairs Cecilia Rodríguez Pino and Patricia MacGregor-Mendoza seek
submissions for the 11th Conference on Teaching Spanish to Native Speakers. 
Submissions are being requested for 30-minute paper sessions (20 minutes
presentation 10 minutes discussion) and 2-hour workshop sessions (1.5 hours
presentation, .5 hour discussion) and half-day workshops (3.5 hour presentation,
.5 hour discussion).  Topics may be drawn from any discipline, but should be
broadly related to advancing knowledge of this growing field by identifying the
unique social or linguistic characteristics of Native Spanish Speakers (e.g.
issues in identity, social history, dialect, proficiency, etc.), developing
pedagogical theory and/or implementing pedagogical techniques that address the
specific needs of Spanish speakers. 

Paper submissions:  submit one copy of a one-page abstract that includes the
title, an outline of the focus of the paper and the audience for which your
presentation is intended (elementary, secondary, post-secondary, adult
education, community, etc.).  At the end of your abstract please include the
name, affiliation, address, phone and e-mail of all presenters.  Please also
indicate what audio-visual support you require for the presentation

Workshop submissions:  submit a one to two-page abstract which includes the
following information: the title and the length of the presentation (2 hours or
half-day), the audience for which your workshop is intended (elementary,
secondary, post-secondary, adult education, community) a detailed description of
the themes of the workshop and answers to the following questions:  What are the
overall goals of the workshop?  What types of materials will be presented to the
participants?  In what activities will the participants engage as part of this
workshop and in what manner (individual, pairs, groups)?  What skills, abilities
and materials will participants take away with them as a result of this
workshop?  At the end of your abstract please include the name, affiliation,
address, phone and e-mail of all presenters.  Please also indicate what
audio-visual support you require for the presentation.

Interested in chairing a session?  The responsibilities of a session chair are
giving brief introductions of the speakers for each session and providing
speakers guidance on the amount of time left in the session.  If you would like
to be a session chair, please send an e-mail to Cecilia R. Pino

MT Summit X

The 8th Workshop on Interlinguas and Interlingual Approaches to MT: 
Spoken Language Translation

This one-day workshop on interlingual approaches to spoken language MT,
with special emphasis on Asian languages, will be held on Friday, September
16, 2005, in Phuket, Thailand, in conjunction with the MT Summit X.

Theme and goal

The goal of the AMTA SIG-IL Workshop Series on Interlinguas and
Interlingual Approaches to MT is to stimulate interest in research and
design issues related to interlingual representations and the development
of interlingual translation systems. (For summaries of prior meetings, see
the AMTA SIG-IL web home page at:
http://crl.nmsu.edu/Events/FWOI/index.html). This 8th Workshop in the
series brings together specialists in MT and NLP to work out practical
representation systems for a range of pragmatic and semantic phenomena
related to the translations of spoken dialogue and development of
speech-to-speech translation systems. 

Papers are invited on the interlingual representation and/or processing of:
- dialogue structure, discourse structure and rhetorical structure,
- conversation analysis or conversational structure (turn-taking),
- speech acts (including pauses),
- conversational implicature,
- reference resolution or generation and/or the recovery or generation of
ellipted information,
- extra-linguistic context and deictic references, 
- interlocutor (speaker-addressee) or interpersonal relationships (e.g.,
politeness),
- disfluencies and/or erroneous speech recognition output,
- other discourse or dialogue related phenomena, for translation and, in
particular, for spoken language translation.

Preference will be given to contributions that focus on these phenomena in
particular in Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Thai, or other
Asian languages although any language pair may serve as a context. We
encourage discussions that provide abundant multilingual evidence or
address the use of multilingual parallel corpora. Preference will also be
given to contributions that relate to actual research and development
projects using interlingual approaches to MT or multilingual NLP.

Planned activities	

The workshop will consist of approximately eight 25-minute presentations,
each followed by a 30-minute discussion period. The discussion will begin
with a brief critique by a pre-selected discussant and rebuttal by the
author and then conclude with a 15-minutes open discussion. 

In addition, a workshop banquet will be planned for the participants and
their guests for the evening of September 16.

The proceedings be available to the participants at the time of the
workshop in both printed and CD ROM form. They will include the accepted
contributions, the critiques and the author's response to the critiques.
The CD ROM version will be included along with the contributions to the
main conference. The printed version will be published by the Computing
Research Laboratory at New Mexico State University (USA).
