Dear Subscribers,

As a unique team of dedicated and computationally-inclined young linguists, The
LINGUIST List crew has had the privilege of running several projects funded by
grants from the National Science Foundation.

This email is a report on the 2001 NSF Social Sciences Infrastructure Grant:
"E-MELD: Electronic Metastructure for Endangered Languages Data". You can find
details of other NSF funded projects here: http://linguistlist.org/support/nsf.html

Projects such as these - universally regarded as vital for the future of
language on the planet - would not be possible in a world without the ready-made
infrastructure of LINGUIST.

Support this valuable institution. Donate today.

Thank you,
- Your LINGUIST crew.

The E-MELD (Electronic Metastructure for Endangered Languages Data,
http://emeld.org) project aims to develop community based best practice
standards for digitizing and archiving language documentation, and to develop
infrastructure for collaboration among international archives. E-MELD is a five
year grant supported through the NSF, and is currently in its fourth year.

Each year E-MELD has a workshop that brings together international experts in
linguistics, computer science, information technology and language engineering.
These workshops consist of invited papers, general sessions, and working group
sessions in which the workshop participants provide recommendations on topics of
best practice specific to the conference's agenda. The first annual workshop in
2001 addressed the need for standards for the digitization of linguistic data,
which included the formation of working groups to make recommendations for
metadata creation, linguistic markup, and language codes. These issues were
further developed and expanded in subsequent years. In 2002 experts gathered at
the workshop on 'Digitizing Lexical Information', in 2003 at the workshop on
'Digitizing and Annotating Text and Field Recordings', and last summer's 2004
workshop centered on 'Linguistics Databases and Best Practices.'

Over the last four years these recommendations have been gathered by LINGUIST
List research assistants and have been formulated into a tutorial website called
'The E-MELD School of Best Practices in Digital Language Documentation'
(http://emeld.org/school/). This site provides an overview of current best
practice standards in digitizing language data. There are many facets, all of
which are freely available to users: access to internet based tools developed by
E-MELD for linguistic analysis and character input, an extensive searchable
bibliography on all aspects of the digitization of language documentation, case
studies that survey best practices implemented on legacy data of typologically
diverse endangered languages, detailed explanations of archival, presentation,
and working formats for different digital medium, and an ask-an-expert facility
to direct user questions to a panel of E-MELD advisors with technical expertise.
If you are a linguist interested in preserving language data in ways which will
endure, please visit the School. It has many other features that you should
check out.

For those interested in E-MELD, we invite you to check out the call for
participation and call for papers for this year's conference, 'Linguistic
Ontologies and Data Categories in Morphosyntactic Annotation', at:

http://emeld.org/workshop/2005/call.html

As part of the effort to promote consensus on best practices in digital language
documentation, E-MELD is hosting its 2005 workshop from July 1-3 in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, in conjunction with the 2005 LSA Institute. The goal of the
workshop is to invite community participation in the development of GOLD, the
General Ontology for Linguistic Description developed by the E-MELD team at the
University of Arizona. It will debut the vision for the 'GOLD Community', an
international partnership of institutions and individuals who will build a
global infrastructure to make a combined knowledge of the world's languages
fully accessible and interoperable. The submission deadline this year is March
28th, 2005.

Thank you,
The E-MELD Team

Subject: How to donate...

This Year the LINGUIST List hope to raise $48,867. This money will go to help
keep the List running, by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to
donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

http://linguistlist.org/donate.html

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as
such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered
501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These
donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return
(U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact
your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your
contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU
Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple
administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST,
without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your
company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
