Dissertation Abstract:

This thesis describes the Valangi people, herdsmen and farmers, and
especially their language, spoken in the Kondoa Region, in Tanzania.

The study is divided into six parts: an introduction to the social and
linguistic contexts in which the Valangi live; a description of Langi
phonology, consisting of 29 consonants and 7 vowel timbres; a presentation
of the 18 noun classes and of the agreement patterns between the
independant nominal and dependant nominals; a description of the verbal
system; a study of the major syntactic categories. Annexed are three
lexicons: Langi-English-French; French-Langi; English-Langi; and a list of
Langi tree names, with the corresponding botanical terms, as well as their
names in 41 other languages spoken in Tanzania.
