Meeting Description:

The meeting will bring together experts using different approaches to address
the same problem, i.e. the origin of language. The proposed program is organized
around three themes, all aiming at identifying the biological and behavioral
prerequisites of the linguistic capacity of modern humans.

Note: Information on financial support for PhD students follows the conference
program.

The European Science Foundation Eurocores OMLL (Origin of Man, Language and
Languages) will support in Ferrara (Italy) an International Workshop on
''Phylogeny and Ontogeny of Human Communication''. Three main fields of
discussion will be taken into account:
- From primates to humans: what evolution says on communication
- Action, imitation and communication development in infants
- Genes and language evolution

In consideration of the relevance of the meeting for the understanding of human
development, the EC funded Integrated Project Robot-Cub (6th framework,
http://www.robotcub.org) will cover the travel costs of 10 European PhD students
aiming to participate to this initiative. Robot-Cub (coordinated by the Univ. of
Genova - DIST and which includes the Neurophysiology team of the University of
Ferrara coordinated by L. Fadiga) is an important project which involves 11
leading European groups aiming at studying the human development through the
realization of a developing artifact. PhD students interested in the initiative
are invited to apply by sending by email before the 5/5/2005:

1) A brief curriculum (half page)
2) One letter of presentation
3) A list of up to three publications they authored and that they consider
particularly relevat to the topics of the meeting
4) One publication chosen among the listed ones (pdf file) to:

After a comparative selection, those applicants which will be considered above
the threshold will be informed of the positive judgement and will receive an
e-ticket covering the travel costs. They should provide by themselves to local
accomodation (meals and hotel). A list of low-cost hotels will be communicated.
