The conference will focus on research having to do with themes like contrast,
equivalence and similarity; corpus linguistics; translation universals;
pragmatic and cognitive approaches to the study of language and translation;
linguistic competence and translation competence.

SLT06 - Ghent, 12-14 Jan 2006

Call for Papers - Extension of deadline
The submission deadline for abstracts for the Ghent International Conference on
The Study of Language and Translation has been extended to May 31, 2005.

The conference is devoted to the study of the interface between Linguistics and
Translation Studies. It is organized by the Ghent School of Translation Studies,
in collaboration with Ghent and Antwerp University, and under the auspices of
the Linguistic Society of Belgium.

Papers are invited on the general theme of the conference, dealing with
linguistic questions related to or relevant for translation, and reports on
translation research with a bearing on linguistic theorizing. Presentations will
be 20 minutes with 10 minutes discussion time.

In particular, papers are encouraged that explore
-	Contrast, similarity and equivalence in linguistics and translation studies
-	Corpora and the study of language and translation
-	Translation universals
-	Pragmatic approaches to linguistics and translation studies
-	The cognitive approach to the study of language and translation
-	Linguistic competence and translation competence

Abstracts

Your abstract of max. 350 words should be submitted via the form on the website
http://www.slt06.be , or sent in word or rtf format to slt06 at hogent.be. Please
state research questions, approach, method, data and (expected) results.
Abstracts will be refereed anonymously.

Meeting Description:

This one-day workshop during the LSA Institute will bring together researchers
in semantics, pragmatics, and philosophy of language to discuss the role of
context in interpretation.

This is a call for abstracts for a small number of contributed talks at a one
day workshop on ''Context and Content -- Topics in Formal Pragmatics'' to be
held on July 15 during the 2005 LSA Institute at MIT and Harvard.

The workshop will bring together researchers in semantics, pragmatics, and
philosophy of language to discuss the role of context in interpretation.
Possible topics of focus include:

* Context-Relativity (of Modals, Knowledge Attributions, ...)
* Speech Acts in Compositional Semantics
* Expressive Meanings
* Indexicals and Monsters
* Implicature Projection

The invited speakers are

* Gennaro Chierchia
* Danny Fox & Martin Hackl
* Angelika Kratzer
* Bob Stalnaker

Each of the talks will be 40 minutes long. There will be 10 minutes of comments
from a designated commentator and then ample time for questions and discussion
from the audience.

Abstracts should be no longer than 3 pages (including examples and references)
in a legible font. Only electronic submissions of pdf files will be accepted.
