'Language, Diversity and Integration in the Enlarged EU: Challenges and Opportunities' is an international interdisciplinary conference, to be held in Kaunas, Lithuania, on 12 - 14 May 2006. It will bring together scholars working in linguistics, education, anthropology, and social science with a common interest in the ways in which language ideologies, policies and practices impact on the consolidation of society post EU enlargement. What is the interplay between language, diversity and integration following EU enlargement? Has the role of language in practices relating to (the expression of) ethnicity, nationhood and citizenship changed? How are prevailing ideologies pertaining to cultural and linguistic differences reflected in the public discourse and transmitted through the media? What are the implications of EU enlargement on language and integration?

This international interdisciplinary conference will bring together scholars working in linguistics, education, anthropology, and social science with a common interest in the ways in which language ideologies, policies and practices impact on the consolidation of society post EU enlargement.

We welcome papers in the following areas:

Lexicology and lexicography in Occitan and in other subordinated languages

Call for papers

The systematic work on the lexicon, with a descriptive or codification purpose, is a very delicate domain in Occitan and in subordinated languages in general. It requires a demanding work with a huge corpus. The collection and the systematic treatment of lexical data needs considerable human and financial means which subordinated languages find it very difficult to obtain, contrary to established languages.

Lexicography (as the method of dictionary making) and lexicology (as vocabulary study) are sectors which still lack researchers, promotion and visibility in Occitan studies.

In lexicography, after an early work like Lo Tresaur dau Felibritge 'Lou Tresor dóu Felibrige' of Frederic Mistral (1879-1886), we have to state that the edition in contemporary Occitan gave in particular lexicons, and really scientific projects are rather rare. Paradoxically, this situation contrasts with actual programmes in medieval lexicography which benefit from a serious lexicographic method, modernised technical means and which are much more embedded in university structures.

Lexicology still doesn't clarify efficiently the dysfunctions about the lexicon which are abundant in the Occitan Renaissance movement: maximal separation or loan from the dominant language, hypercorrections, not well understood interferences, emblematic forms, intransigent localism, erroneous constructions. These practices which originate often in mythical representations of language contact, slow down the acceptance of applied linguistics. On the contrary, the most solid lexicology manifests itself in particular in descriptive domains like dialectology (for the modern language) and Romance philology (for the ancient and modern language alike).

Can the actual research carried out on Occitan lexicology and lexicography lead to solutions?
The goal of the workshop is to obtain an overview of current research and to identify new avenues for future research. From the important topics for research, we can suggest the following (this list is not exhaustive):

- Compare standardisation (codification, complementation) approaches and purely descriptive ones.

- Compare works on modern and on ancient Occitan. Analyse the technological and institutional advancement of medieval studies.

- Better understand the progress made in other subordinated languages which produced dictionaries and lexicological studies of good quality.

- Better integrate often neglected lexicon zones like onomastics and abbreviations. 

- Reflect on the lack of vulgarisation of lexicography and lexicology in the Occitan Renaissance movement, and in particular in the opinion, with the epilinguistic representations which follow concerning Occitan (or subordinated languages).

- Analyse the modern fashion of terminology despite the deficits in lexicology and lexicography.

- Examine the contributions of big streams in linguistics (classical structuralism, generativism, sociolinguistics) and their manner in conditioning different approaches.

- Compare regional and panoccitan approaches. Analyse the different dynamics in diverse regional studies.

- Think of the editorial and pedagogic applications, and in particular the institutions which would bring a correctly presented lexicon to the language's users.

- Conceive an Occitan ''dictionaristics'': how to choose between monolingual or bilingual dictionaries, for the larger audience or specialists, normative or descriptive, with which standard varieties? With which meta-language?

- Link the preoccupations of specialists who work on Occitan lexicology and lexicography and who don't know each other well enough yet.

- Articulate the descriptive and prescriptive dimensions.

These are the questions we will try to answer.

The contributions will mainly deal with Occitan, but we will be pleased to accept works on other subordinated languages or every contribution that could in whatever way make Occitan lexicology or lexicography advance.

Apart from the communications the workshop will feature a round table, in order to strengthen the exchange of experiences between diverse specialists.

Working languages: Occitan, English and French.

The programme will consist of the communications and the round table.

Submission of contributions:
- Deadline: February 15th 2006
- Send them electronically to articles at revistadoc.org
- Send three copies of each contribution, one signed (author's name, electronic address, affiliation) and two unsigned.
- Abstract of maximally 3000 characters.
- Word document, font Times New Roman, single line space, A4 format.
- For the contributions in Occitan, the meta-language will conform to the classic norm of the CLO. We will accept Mistral norm, too.
- Phonetic transcriptions in the International Phonetic Alphabet (with the font IPA Kiel, or another font that's known enough which you will have to send in an attachment to the e-mail).
