We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Subject: Seeking Mexican Spanish Formant Chart and Studies

I am a graduate student working on my thesis--an acoustic analysis of
American English vowel acquisition by a Spanish speaker, using Flege's
Speech Learning Model with respect to 'new' and 'similar' vowel
acquisition. I have searched the academic databases, but have not found
some pieces of information which would be very helpful. I am looking for a
formant chart of Mexican-Spanish including all 5 vowels and the specific
formant frequencies. I have found charts for other dialects, but not
Mexican Spanish. My data are prerecorded, so I cannot elicit specific
samples from my subject.

Additionally, I would like to find a study that has determined which
American English vowels are new and similar for a Spanish speaker based on
perception or acoustics (rather than soley relying on IPA symbols). I have
found some studies of the front vowels, but would like to find some on the
back vowels. My study focuses on /ae, o, u/.

Any information is appreciated.

Hi,

I'm compiling a list of languages which currently have phonemic vowel or
consonant length (or both).

Will greatly appreciate any input.

Will be especially grateful for detailed info, such as the number of
distinguished lengths of same sound (2 or 3 (or more?)), or existing
measurements of differences in duration, or any relevant references.

Thank you!
