Meeting Description:

Aims

The Information Technology Enabled Services - ITES - Industry is the fastest growing user of English language training in the world. The two major destinations for outsourced processing and call centres are India and the Philippines, with China becoming ever more important. It is thus timely to hold the inaugural ITES English Skills Conference in Manila.

This conference will bring together ITES industry practitioners in outsourcing destinations in Asia with international English language teachers and applied linguistic academics and researchers. It will be a unique opportunity for academics and business to share experience and learn from each other.

Specifically, this conference will address the following language issues which are critical for ensuring appropriate English language skills in non-English speaking countries.

How do we make English language training relevant for companies and participants in the call centre and ITES industries?

What is the value of English language communication for a company?
How do we measure English language skill levels accurately for recruitment and training needs?

What are the issues in developing Quality scorecards that reflect quality targets, communication needs and training agendas?

What is an industry language audit?

What are the current best practices in English language communication, assessment and training, and trainer education for the ITES Industry?

Papers from academics and industry practitioners will cover the following sectors:

Call centre operations and communication
ITES English Curriculum

Meeting Description:

The Fourth International Conference on Construction Grammar (ICCG4), September 1-3, 2006, University of Tokyo, Japan

CALL FOR PAPERS
The Fourth International Conference on Construction Grammar (ICCG4)
September 1-3, 2006
University of Tokyo, Japan
http://gamp.c.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~iccg2006/iccg2006.html

We are pleased to announce the call for papers for ICCG4, which marks the fourth occasion on which researchers engaged in Construction Grammar and the study of grammatical constructions in general gather together from around the world. As in the past ICCGs, the main purpose of ICCG4 is to provide a forum for presenting construction-based research in its various models and applications. ICCG4 also aims to deepen our understanding of Frame Semantics, which is a twin brother of Construction Grammar. In addition, a special feature of ICCG4 is that we hope to promote mutual exchange of ideas between practitioners of Construction Grammar and Japanese scholars from various backgrounds who share a construction-based approach to language.

Plenary speakers:
Collin Baker (International Computer Science Institute)
Charles J. Fillmore (ICSI & University of California at Berkeley)
   Adele Goldberg (Princeton University)
Knud Lambrecht (University of Texas at Austin)
   Yo Matsumoto (Kobe University)
Minoru Nakau (Reitaku University & University of Tsukuba)
   Jan-Ola Ostman (University of Helsinki)
Masayoshi Shibatani (Rice University & Kobe University)
Michael Tomasello (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology)

Abstracts for regular conference papers (20 min. talk plus 10 min. discussion) are invited on any aspect of linguistic analysis that is concerned with grammatical constructions and/or semantic frames. We welcome work on issues in syntax, morphology, semantics, pragmatics, discourse, language acquisition, corpus linguistics, language typology/change, etc.
