The Department of Linguistics in the School of Modern Languages at Queen
Mary, University of London has 3 College Research Studentships to award to
suitably qualified candidates applying for an M.Phil/Ph.D. The studentships
are fully-funded, providing a maintenance grant at the London rate paid by
the UK Research Councils and are to be awarded by the Summer of 2005.  Fees
are waived for both home and overseas students.

We welcome applications to carry out research in the fields of Word and
Sentence prosody, Hispanic Linguistics, Romance Linguistics, Syntax and
Sociolinguistics, though preference may be given to candidates wanting to
work on Word and Sentence Prosody or a topic in Hispanic Linguistics or
Romance Linguistics. For fuller details of areas in which we offer

advised to contact a potential supervisor before submitting a formal
application.

Applicant should have (or expect to have by the end of 2004-5) an MA or
equivalent qualification. To be eligible you need to apply for a research
programme by completing the Postgraduate Application Form, enclosed with
the Graduate School Prospectus, which can be obtained by sending your

The completed application form, two academic references, a substantial
piece of written work (about 5,000 words in English) and a 300-word thesis
proposal should reach the Postgraduate Studies Office, at the address
above, before 18th February 2005.Any applicant for admission to a research
programme to commence in 2005-06 will automatically be considered for the
scholarship competition. There is no separate application form.  

The same application form can be used to apply for admission to the MA
programmes in Language Society and Change in Europe, and the MA in
Linguistics by Research. There are 2 College Bursaries to the value of
£1,500 that may be awarded to suitably qualified candidates.  

The closing date for applications is February 18 2005. Applications
received after this date will still be considered for admission but may be
to late to be considered for the scholarship and bursary competition.
