Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Language Acquisition

Meeting Description:

The symposium's goal is two fold. First is to bring together individuals
who have become fluent second language speakers, as well as second language
speakers who are passing their fluency onto others, for participants to
learn how they can utilize these successes in their own efforts to keep
their languages alive. Second is to provide a forum for individual
researchers in the field of Native language acquisition to present their
work at a one-day symposium.

The workshop part of the symposium will guide language instructors through
a method called Accelerated Second Language Acquisition.(TM) This method
has broad application as a tool for language instruction across diverse
languages and age groups, which will be supported with video footage of
children learning Arapaho plus a university introduction to Arapaho class.
In addition to this students currently taking an introduction to Arapaho
language class wil be present to illustrate what and how they have learned.
Dr. Greymorning developed this approach to specifically bring second
language learners to a level of language competency while accommodating
language instructors working with limited resources and time. The workshop
will also include a Cree family who in 2002 used this method with their 6
year son who was brought to fluency by 2004.
