The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

University or Organization: University of Edinburgh
Department: Human Communication Research Centre/School of Informatics
Job Rank: Research Associate in Lexicon Tools and Robust Parsing in Dialogue
Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Lexical Semantics

Description:

The aim of this ONR-funded project is to create a toolset to aid in
the development of a wide-coverage parser for deep parsing and
semantic interpretation. You will develop tools to facilitate
extensions to a deep parser's lexicon based on existing wide-coverage
dictionaries, and devise algorithms for efficient parsing and robust
interpretation. Ideally you will have experience in grammar
development, lexical semantics, and semantic interpretation. Strong
programming skills in Java and/or Lisp are essential. Knowledge of
parsing technologies and machine learning techniques is a plus.

The project is titled 'A shared resource for Robust Semantic
Interpretation for both Linguists and Non-Linguists'. The project will
concentrate on extending a lexicon for a deep linguistically-motivated
parser with the aid of information found in wide-coverage dictionaries
such as FrameNet, VerbNet or Comlex, to aid linguists in developing a
wide-coverage parser for semantic interpretation in dialogue
systems. Additionally, robust parsing techniques for dealing with
unknown words and grammar constructions will be explored in context of
deep parsing and semantic interpretation.

The appointment has an initial fixed duration of up to 30 months, with
opportunities for continuation, and is expected to start April 1st
2005, or shortly thereafter.
Salary Scale: GBP 19,460 to 29,128
