The paradigm in phonology: contrast, analogy, defectivity 
April 25-29, 2005 
Venue:   University of Tromsø 

Our guest lecturers for this course will be Miklós Törkenczy and Péter
Rebrus from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and ELTE, in Budapest. 

The course will span one week and will include approx. 10 hours of
teaching. If you would like to come to Tromsø to participate in this
course, you are welcome to attend. If we can be of any assistance in

Topic one: paradigmatic uniformity and contrast
The goal of this part of the lecture series is to show how notions of
paradigmatic uniformity and contrast relativised to specific
morphosyntactic dimensions can explain the organisation of paradigms. We
will discuss a fairly complex system in detail, the Hungarian verbal
paradigm, whose 'irregularities' are motivated by paradigmatic uniformity
and contrast. This analysis is essentially within OT.

Topic two: analogical relations
Another related but different topic that we plan to explore is an approach
which makes use of the intuitive concept of analogy in terms of the
algebraic notion of proportions and dispenses with the need for underlying
forms. We will give an outline of such a model.
