Special issue of the INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENGLISH STUDIES on

COGNITIVE PHONOLOGY

A special issue of the International Journal of English Studies (IJES) will
be devoted to cognitive phonology. Cognitive Phonology is an
interdisciplinary field of research that lies at the crossroads between the
cognitive, the linguistic and the phonetic sciences.

This special issue seeks submissions of original studies (theoretical,
empirical, experimental) from across the range of phonological issues
investigated under a cognitive perspective. The special issue welcomes
papers dealing with (but not limited to) the following topics:

-psycholinguistic aspects of phonology
-categorization in phonology
-prototype theory in phonology
-hierarchical organization of phonological categories
-cognitive grammar's view of phonology
-usage-based models of phonology
-phonetic grounding of phonological systems/categories
-factors shaping phonological systems/categories (e.g. cognitive, social,
physiological, developmental, etc.).
-practical applications of cognitive phonological theory (e.g. language
teaching/learning, translation, computer-assisted instruction, etc.).

Although the main body of the issue will contain original studies, book
reviews will also be considered if the book is directly related to the
topics listed above.

SUBMISSION, FORMATTING AND REVIEWING PROCESS

Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their abstract to
the issue editor as a single Word or PDF file.

Abstracts should be between 300 and 500 words, and clearly display their
relevance to the topics listed above (or related ones). All abstract
submissions should include the provisional title of the paper, the name of
the author(s), and their affiliation as well as their regular postal and
e-mail addresses. Authors should also provide brief details (up to 50
words) of their professional autobiography. Where there are two or more
autors, a single contact for correspondence should be indicated.

Although the format for abstracts is not strict, subsequent articles should
be written following the instructions to authors guidelines of IJES,
available at http://www.um.es/engphil/docs/ijes_g.pdf

Research manuscripts must be between 6000-8000 words although, when
merited, longer submissions will be considered; book reviews should be
between 1000-1500 words.

The abstracts and papers submitted will be anonymously reviewed by three
suitably qualified researchers to the usual standards of IJES. This process
will be based on assessing the originality, significance, technical
soundness, clarity of exposition and level of contribution that are present
in the submitted abstract/paper.

SCHEDULE

Deadlines for submission of abstracts/manuscripts and for notification of
acceptance/rejection are as specified below:

Submission of abstracts: 15 April, 2005
Notification of acceptance: 15 May, 2005
Manuscript due: 15 January, 2006
Notification of acceptance/rejection and reviewer feedback: 15 April, 2006
